WASHINGTON – On the heels of a 62-47 victory against cross-town rival American, the George Washington women's basketball team heads south to compete in the FIU Invitational hosted in Miami, Fla. The Revolutionaries will face Miami (OH) on Friday, then battle Hampton on Saturday. Both games will tip at 2:00 p.m., be played at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center and air live on ESPN+.
SIERRA-VARGAS SHINES IN FIRST START
In her third season with the program, junior Natalia Sierra-Vargas earned her first career start on Monday night at American. The guard didn't disappoint, putting up career highs in points, rebounds, assists and recording her first career block in the winning effort. Arguably the most impressive stat, however, was the goose egg she put up in the turnover column during her 32 minutes of work. Running the point, Sierra-Vargas guided the Revolutionaries' offense to its lowest turnover total of the season with eight. Her night ended with eight points, a team-high nine rebounds, all of which came in the first half, four assists and a steal. Sierra-Vergas and the Revolutionaries will look to ride this momentum into the Sunshine State before the holiday break.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
Coming off a 67-51 loss to Purdue on Tuesday night, Miami heads south with a 5-3 overall record with wins against Appalachian State, Austin Peay, Dayton, Tiffin (NCAA Division II) and Hiram (NCAA Division III). In his second year with the program, head coach Glenn Box has amassed a 14-23 record after posting a 9-20 season in 2023-24. After battling the Revolutionaries on Friday, the RedHawks turn their attention to host FIU on Saturday for a noon contest. This marks the end of non-conference play for the program as they enter Mid-American Conference action at the start of the new year.
Offensively, the program is led by Enjulina Gonzalez, who averages 14.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. The 5-9 sophomore guard and native of Miami, Fla., will be making a homecoming for the week and has shot the ball at an impressive 44.7% clip from the floor. Along with Gonzalez, Amber Tretter is also averaging double figures at 11.1 points and leads the team in rebounding at 7.3 per night. Tretter is also tops on the team in field goal percentage (53.4%) and averages over a block a game (1.1 bpg). Tamar Singer dishes out 3.8 assists a game to lead the team while also recording 19 steals on the season.
SCOUTING THE LADY PIRATES
Hampton, who also played on Tuesday night, picked up a 76-67 victory over Gardner-Webb to move to 3-5 on the year. The Lady Pirates' most impressive win of the season came on Dec. 1, knocking off Georgia in overtime, 76-74. Hampton drilled a buzzer-beater to sink the Bulldogs, the first win over a power conference opponent in over five years. Hampton is led by Tamisha Augustin, who's in her first season at the helm. She played collegiate basketball at Alabama A&M and graduated in 2005.
On the court, the lone player averaging double figures for Hampton is Jasha Clinton, who's putting in 14 points a night. Janae Dublin averages 9.3 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds a game, while CeCe Thomas is tallying 8.3 points and 2.6 boards. Amyah Reaves leads the team in assists, dishing out 4.3 a game while also adding in 5.6 points as well.
