WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team defended The District against DMV foe American on Monday night, rolling to a 62-47 victory. The win marked Head Coach Caroline McCombs' 50th with the Buff & Blue and improved the team's record to 6-4 overall.
GW's stifling defense gave the Eagles trouble all night, holding the opposition to just eight points in the first quarter. GW's D, coupled with consistent offense, allowed George Washington to build a 34-19 lead at halftime and never look back. After pushing the lead to 10 points at 28-18 in the second quarter, the Revolutionaries' lead was never cut to single digits again.
Natalia Sierra-Vargas, who made her first career start in the contest, contributed a huge spark on both ends of the court. She record career-highs in points (eight), rebounds (nine) and assists (four) on the night, while also recording her first career block in the contest. Sierra-Vargas pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, leading the way to a 49-38 advantage on the glass and a 16-11 lead in second chance points, both keys to GW's strong performance.
On the inside, GW's play in the paint was another contributing factor to the victory. The Revolutionaries more than doubled the Eagles' paint production, finishing with a 38-16 edge in points scored in the key. Makayla Andrews led the way statistically for GW, pouring in 16 points and pulling down eight rebounds off GW's bench. The Revolutionaries' bench production was a big boost, outscoring American's bench 34-11.
First-year Morgan Matthews tied her career-high in the contest, putting in 10 points and pulling down six boards. Kamari Sims registered seven points for the Buff & Blue, while Caia Loving notched a season-high eight. American was led by Laura Nogues and Anna Rescifina with 10 points apiece. The Patriots fell to 0-9 on the season.
Before the holiday break, GW heads south to Miami for two games hosted at Florida International. The Buff & Blue battle Miami (OH) (Friday) and Hampton (Saturday). Both games will tip at 2:00 p.m.
