WASHINGTON – Following a 78-66 opening-night win over Delaware, the George Washington women's basketball team looks to defend the District on Friday at Howard. Tip-off against the Bison is slated for 6:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
SEASON-OPENING WIN
The Buff & Blue opened the 2024-25 season in style with a dominant victory over Delaware on Monday. Despite a slow offense start in the first few minutes for both teams, the Revolutionaries managed to build a slim 21-20 advantage after the first quarter. Riding their momentum, GDUB held the Blue Hens to just 10 points in the second, stretching the lead to 39-30 at the break.
Out of halftime, GW started the third quarter on a 13-5 run and ultimately outscored Delaware 21-12 in the frame. From there it was smooth sailing as GW built its advantage up to 22 points midway through the fourth and cruised to the victory. GW increased its all-time advantage over Delaware to 6-1 in the fifth-straight victory for GDUB over the Blue Hens.
GRADUATE TRANSFERS MAKE BIG IMPACT
Headlined by Makayla Andrews' stellar performance, GW's trio of graduate transfers combined for 38 points and 16 rebounds on Monday against the Blue Hens. Andrews, a transfer from Lafayette, poured in a team-high 24 points and grabbed three boards. She was efficient from the field as well, going 8-for-16 from the field and knocking down 8-of-9 free throws.
Coming off the bench, Bryant transfer Mariona Planes Fortuny provided an offensive spark that fueled GW's second unit. Planes Fortuny netted 14 points and pulled down six rebounds, all while finishing 4-for-7 from the field and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe.
Northwestern transfer Paige Mott came up big on the defensive end for the Buff & Blue. Mott grabbed seven rebounds in the contest and also tallied one of GW's two blocks.
REYNOLDS SHINES IN DEBUT
In her first collegiate game, 2023-24 Michigan Miss Basketball Award winner Gabby Reynolds didn't disappoint. Reynolds orchestrated GW's offense like a seasoned veteran, tallying 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field while also dishing out three assists and grabbing two rebounds. Reynolds played 32 minutes for the Revolutionaries in her debut, scoring GW's first points of the season on a three-pointer from the right wing. Reynolds was one of three first-years to see time in the season-opener as the group looks to make an early impact during their collegiate careers.
SCOUTING THE BISON
Howard enters Friday's matchup 1-0 as well after tallying an identical 78-66 victory in its season-opener. The Bison traveled south to Tallahassee, Fla., to battle Florida A&M on Monday, led by reigning MEAC Player of the Year Destiny Howell, with 23 points and six rebounds. Howell, who was picked to repeat as the conference's top player during the MEAC Preseason Awards, which were announced in mid-October, led all scorers in the game and also dished out two assists. Kaiya Creek also had a solid season-opener, putting in 17 points and grabbing four boards. Saniyah King tallied 13 points and dished out a game-high five assists.
Led by 10th-year Head Coach Ty Grace, Howard trails the Revolutionaries in the all-time series 13-11. Grace is 1-3 against GW during her tenure, while Buff & Blue bench boss Caroline McCombs is a perfect 3-0 against the area rival. GW has had a lot of recent success against Howard, winning 10 of the last 11 meetings. However, only three of those victories have been earned outside of the Smith Center's friendly confines.
