Second Half Rally Comes up Short at Howard

WASHINGTON – After falling behind by 10 at the halftime break, the George Washington women's basketball team used a 15-2 run to open the second half and take its first lead of the game midway through the third. Despite the push, the Revolutionaries couldn't hang on, dropping the contest, 69-66, to Howard on Friday night.
The Bison, who were celebrating their home-opener, started the game hot, jumping out to an early 11-2 advantage and maintaining a lead of at least five points for the entire first half. The Buff & Blue shot just 25% from the field in the opening quarter, making just three field goals en route to nine total points.
Despite the early struggles, GW shrugged off the sluggish shooting and went on a 15-2 run to open the third quarter, keeping Howard scoreless for the first four minutes of action. The Revolutionaries eventually took their first lead of the game with 4:34 left in the third on a Gabby Reynolds layup. The Bison eventually evened things out, knotting the contest at 44 apiece heading into the final stanza.
In the fourth, the Buff & Blue weren't able to build a lead of more than two points, allowing Howard to string together timely shots and grow a lead of seven points with under two minutes to play. The Buff & Blue made a late push and cut the deficit to three, but ran out of time and eventually fell by a final score of 69-66.
First-year Gabby Reynolds continues her solid start to collegiate ball, leading the Revolutionaries with 22 points and eight rebounds. Reynolds finished 7-for-15 from the floor and nailed three triples as well. Mariona Planes Fortuny tallied her first double-double in the Buff & Blue, recording 10 points and a game-high 14 boards. Paige Mott also got into double figures with 10, while also grabbing five carroms.
GDUB returns to the Smith Center on Monday, November 11, to host VU-Lynchburg at 6:00 p.m. Fans can also watch the contest live on ESPN+.
GW fans can get in the game by directly supporting student-athletes through donations to the Buff & Blue Fund. For more information on GW Athletics, fans are encouraged to visit GWsports.com, or follow the Revolutionaries on social media through X (@GWsports) and Instagram (@gwsports).
