WASHINGTON – Following a narrow 69-66 loss at Howard on Friday night, the George Washington women's basketball team returns to the Smith Center for a Monday clash with VU-Lynchburg. Tip-off against the Dragons is slated for 6:00 p.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+.
REYNOLDS CONTINUES STELLAR START
After putting up 17 points and three assists in her first collegiate game last Monday, first-year Gabby Reynolds continued to prove why she was the 2023-24 Michigan Miss Basketball Award winner with another stellar game against Howard on Friday night. Despite the loss, Reynolds poured in a game-high 22 points, shooting 7-for-15 from the field and 3-for-7 from deep. Reynolds also pulled down eight boards in her 37 minutes of action. Through two games thus far, Reynolds is averaging 19.5 points, top among first-years in the Atlantic 10 and fifth overall. She's also averaging 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest, making an early claim as one of the top rookies in the conference.
PLANES FORTUNY PUTS UP CAREER-HIGH
After a stellar four-year career at Bryant that saw her score over 1,200 points and grab over 500 rebounds, grad transfer Mariona Planes Fortuny wasted no time putting up a career-best in the Buff & Blue. On Friday at Howard, Planes Fortuny pulled down a career-best and game-high 14 rebounds, topping her previous top mark of 13, which she had done twice before. Coupled with her 10 points against the Bison, Planes Fortuny also became the first Revolutionary since Mayowa Taiwo (14 points and 15 rebounds on Feb. 17, 2024) to record a double-double in a game. Planes Fortuny has averaged 22.4 minutes per game off GW's bench this season, making a big impact during her time on the court.
SCOUTING THE DRAGONS
VU-Lynchburg enters Monday's contest 0-3 overall with losses to Georgetown, Auburn and Clinton College. The Dragons, led by first-year Head Coach Marquis Lewis, will play just one game at home this season, hitting the road for 26 games. Monday's game will be the Dragon's third in four days after battling Auburn on Friday night and Clinton on Saturday. VUL opened the 2024 season in the DMV, battling Georgetown to an 88-31 defeat. The Dragons followed that up with a 128-36 loss at Auburn and a 72-55 defeat at Clinton.
Aalyssa Rogers has led the Dragons in scoring through the first three games, averaging 11.3 points a night. Karrin Purchas averages 10.3 points, the only other player averaging double figures.
