WASHINGTON - After coming to GW with the title of Michigan Miss Basketball, first-year Gabby Reynolds warranted the eyes on her, anticipating how she would fare in her Buff and Blue debut. Two minutes and 17 seconds into her college career, Reynolds showed the Foggy Bottom faithful what they can expect from the prolific guard as she broke the seal on the Revolutionaries' campaign with her first career three-pointer. After a 17-point, 3-assist debut for the ballyhooed frosh, the GW Revs were a winner, sending Delaware back home on I95 with a 78-66 defeat at the hands of George Washington.
Reynolds was far from the only GW newbie to make an immediate impact as graduate transfer Makayla Andrews (Lafayette) led all scorers with 24 points, and fellow grad Paige Mott (Northwestern) keyed a rebounding effort that outdid Delaware 46-31 on the glass with her seven rebounds. Not to be outdone in the trio of grads new on the scene at George Washington this year, Mariona Planes Fortuny packed 14 points and six rebounds in her suitcase on the trip from Bryant, giving a GW team replacing seven of its top eight scorers from a season ago, plenty of scoring punch in reserve, as she did her damage in 19 minutes off the bench.
A 39-30 halftime score gave way to a third quarter that saw GW sprint out of the locker room with a 21-12 edge, making the final stanza all-but exhibition.
Whistles were aplenty in the contest, with the teams combining for 47 free throws and GW getting the job done at the line by converting 20-of-28 (.714) freebies.
Up next for the 1-0 squad comes a road date crosstown at Howard on Friday night. Tip-off at Burr Gymnasium will be at 6 pm.
