WASHINGTON – Following its fourth win in as many games at home, the George Washington women's basketball team is set to host Morgan State on Wednesday for a matinee contest. Tip-off is slated for noon with live coverage available on ESPN+.
BUFF & BLUE STAY PERFECT AT HOME
GW's 56-46 victory over previously unbeaten Georgia Southern on Saturday marked the fourth-straight win for the Revolutionaries inside the Charles E. Smith Center. GW, who won its first six home games to start last season, has historically been dominant within the friendly confines of the Smith Center, boasting a home winning percentage of .730 in the program's 49-year history. The Revolutionaries have won 10 or more home games in 27 seasons all-time, including the previous two years. GW needs just nine more wins inside the Smith Center to reach 500, currently sitting at a 491-182 record.
BALANCED OFFENSIVE ATTACK
GW's offense has been aided by a balanced attack, which currently sees four players averaging eight or more points per game. Makayla Andrews leads the team in scoring at 12.0 ppg, while first-year Gabby Reynolds isn't far behind at 11.2 ppg. Andrews has gotten into double figures three times in six games this season which leads the Revolutionaries, while Reynolds has hit 10 or more points twice on the year. Mariona Planes Fortuny is just behind with 8.2 ppg and 6.3 rpg, while Sara Lewis continues her balanced start to the season with 8.2 ppg and a team-best 7.8 rpg. Through six games this season, a different player has led the Buff & Blue in scoring in five of those contests. Andrews is the only Revolutionary to be the team's top scorer in two games. GW is currently averaging 66.3 ppg as a team, outscoring opponents on average by 11.6 points.
SCOUTING THE LADY BEARS
Morgan State enters Thanksgiving week 4-5 overall, coming off a west coast trip that saw the team go 0-2 against Stanford and Nevada. Similar to the Revolutionaries, Morgan State is a perfect 4-0 at home this season but has yet to win a road game, sitting at 0-5 thus far. The Lady Bears are led by Head Coach Ed Davis Jr., who's in his 13th season with the program and his ninth at the helm. Davis Jr. holds a 111-121 record as head coach at Morgan State and sits at 454-364 for his career in 29 seasons.
On the court, Morgan State is led by Ja'la Bannerman, who averages 11.3 points per contest. Bannerman is shooting 47.0% from the floor and 45.2% from deep, which is second-best on the squad. Laila Fair is the only other Lady Bear averaging double figures in scoring, putting in an even 10.0 points per night. Fair is shooting the ball at a 47.4% clip from the floor and also leads the team in rebounding at 8.9 boards per game.
The two programs have met eight times prior, splitting the contests evenly at four apiece. GW has won two in a row, winning the matchup in both of the previous two seasons. The last time the Lady Bears got the best of GW came during the 2011-12 campaign.
GW fans can get in the game by directly supporting student-athletes through donations to the Buff & Blue Fund. For more information on GW Athletics, fans are encouraged to visit GWsports.com, or follow the Revolutionaries on social media through X (@GWsports) and Instagram (@gwsports).
