WASHINGTON - Playing in the middle contest of a five-game homestand, GW did its best not to look ahead to Thanksgiving or to Tuesday's first Atlantic 10 game against local rival George Mason and to stay focused on the task at hand in a matinee visit from Morgan St. Despite a Bears' effort that took GW to the wire and a pressing defense that forced 24 Buff & Blue turnovers, George Washington held on to win, 52-47.
Defense was the star of the day for both sides, as GW held their guests below 30% shooting from the floor (17-of-57, .298). For Morgan St., the unit turned its two dozen forced turnovers into 20 points on the other end, giving the GW Revs a look all game that will hopefully pay dividends having gone through the experience when conference play comes around.
Makayla Andrews led all players with 16 points in the low-scoring affair that didn't reach 100 points combined. Sara Lewis was GW's other double-digit scorer with exactly 10. The team's scoring success came largely at the free throw line, where it canned 14-of-17 freebies to salt the game away. The Revolutionaries' 14-8 edge in free throws made was all the difference in the five-point win.
A scheduling oddity has the Patriots making the short trip to Foggy Bottom next Tuesday, with tip-time coming at 6pm, before GW returns back to non-conference action for four more contests until it picks back up with the Atlantic 10 schedule again in late December.
