Women’s Basketball Enters A-10 Play Early, Hosts George Mason on Tuesday
12/2/2024 12:10:00 PM | Women's Basketball
WASHINGTON – In what will be the earliest scheduled Atlantic 10 game in program history, the George Washington women's basketball team is set to host local rival George Mason inside the Smith Center on Tuesday night. The "Revolutionary Rivalry" matchup is set to tip at 6:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
EARLY A-10 MATCHUP
In what has become the new normal over the past two seasons, the Atlantic 10 selects four teams to compete on the first Tuesday of December to open the conference schedule. Last year, Duquesne and Fordham, along with Davidson and Dayton, squared off to begin Atlantic 10 play on Dec. 5. This year, the early calendar makes its way to the DMV with GW and George Mason squaring off. Also, on Tuesday night, La Salle will travel to Loyola Chicago for a 6:00 p.m. contest as well. Following Tuesday's game, GW will dive back into non-conference action for four more games. The Revolutionaries will host Coppin State on Dec. 10, make the short trip to American on Dec. 16, then travel south for two games at the FIU Christmas Classic in Miami, Fla. While in Florida, GW will face Miami (OH) on Dec. 20, and Hampton on Dec. 21. The rest of GW's conference schedule will pick back up after the Christmas holiday with a trip to La Salle on Dec. 29. GW's full 2024-25 schedule can be found here.
GW REMAINS PERFECT AT HOME
Despite struggling to find consistent offensive production, GW remained perfect at home and sent fans into the Thanksgiving holiday with a 52-47 victory over Morgan State last Wednesday. The ninth meeting between the two programs all-time was a back-and-forth affair that saw GW get just enough down the stretch to secure the victory. The Revolutionaries have opened the season 5-0 at home for the second straight year after winning the first six games in Foggy Bottom last year. The Buff & Blue have historically been dominant against the Patriots at home, holding an 18-4 record against George Mason in games played inside the Smith Center.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS
George Mason enters the first week of December with the conference's second-best record thus far at 7-1 overall. The Patriots, whose lone loss came against 10th-ranked Maryland on Saturday, are led by head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis, who's in her fourth season with the Patriots and 26th season as a head coach overall. Following her first two years in Fairfax, Blair-Lewis and the Patriots burst onto the A-10 scene in 2023-24 with a stellar 23-8 overall record and a 14-4 mark in conference action. It was the first time George Mason had won 20 games in six seasons and was the third straight year she had led the program to more wins than the season before.
As a team, George Mason is outscoring opponents by an average of 21.1 ppg while also holding opponents to 38.1% shooting from the field. George Mason is also solid on the glass, grabbing over 41 rebounds per game and outrebounding opponents by eight boards a night. The only team outrebounding George Mason this season is GW, who averages 45.6 rpg. Individually, the Patriots are guided by Kennedy Harris, who averages 18.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Harris is third in the conference in scoring, just behind Megan McConnel (18.5 ppg) and Talya Brugler (18.4 ppg). Zahirah Walton (11.1 ppg) and Nalani Kaysia (10.0 ppg) also average double figures for the Patriots, while Kaysia also leads the team in rebounding at 9.8 rpg. Paula Suarez is fourth in the conference in assists, averaging 4.3 per game.
