Women's Basketball Holds Off Georgia Southern to Stay Perfect at Home, 56-46
11/23/2024 3:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
WASHINGTON - Rolling with the same starting unit and offensive firepower off the bench that Caroline McCombs first found success with last game vs. Towson, the GW Revs women's basketball team was again successful deploying the same look Saturday against Georgia Southern, handing the visiting Eagles their first defeat of the season, 56-46.
Despite a George Washington scoreless stretch in the fourth that spanned almost five minutes, GW had built a sizeable-enough advantage, 55-39 with 7:48 to play, to withstand the drought.
After racking up her first career double-double Wednesday, Sara Lewis was once again monstrous on both ends of the floor to lead GW to victory. Reprising her reserve role, Lewis had team-highs in points (12) and rebounds (8), while picking two steals on defense. The George Washington defense was stifling, forcing 22 turnovers and limiting Georgia Southern to 17-of-52 (.327) from the field, including just .190 from behind the arc (4-of-21). The Eagles' leading scorer, Nicole Gwynn, finished with a game-high 19 points, though it took her 18 shots to get there.
Shooting against a Georgia Southern zone for large portions of the contest, the Buff and Blue were able to take the top off of it with a superb showing from three. Connecting at a .467 clip from deep (7-of-15), the club was paced by Kamari Sims 3-of-5 effort on 3s. Sims finished with 11 points, while Mariona Planes Fortuny also reached double figures with 10 on 4-of-6 shooting (2-for-2 3pt. FG). The grad transfer from Spain via Bryant dished a game-high four assists.
GW stays home through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend with the third game in a five-game homestand coming Wednesday at noon. Byron Kerr and GW alumna Cami Tapias will have the call on ESPN+ against the Morgan State Bears.
