WASHINGTON - In the second of five-straight games at Smith Center Saturday at noon, the George Washington women's basketball team seeks continued mastery of its domain when welcoming in the Sun Belt's Georgia Southern out of Statesboro, Georgia.
The GW Revs have been put on notice in all three home games thus far, but have answered in kind to win all three by at least 12 points, including Wednesday's 69-57 win against Towson. In that contest, Makayla Andrews led the way for GW with 16 points, while Filipa Calisto was also massive. The junior college transfer from Mozambique tallied 14 points, the biggest of which came with 1:30 to play when she banked in a three-pointer from the top of the key to extend a seven-point cushion into double digits. Calisto's 12.5 points per game average in the last two games comes after averaging 3.0 ppg in the first three contests of her D1 career.
With Head Coach Caroline McCombs' traditionally-strong defensive units keying success, the Revolutionaries' attack has also grown new wrinkles in '24-'25. Last game McCombs pressed all the right buttons, bringing Sara Lewis, Paige Mott and Gabby Reynolds off the bench for the first time this season, and the trio responded by keying a reserve effort that outdid their Towson counterparts 29-6 in bench scoring. Lewis was particularly notable in her first career double-double outing.
On the visitors' side, Georgia Southern comes to DC unblemished at 4-0, so something has to give when the squads collash, either Eagles taking their first loss or GW going down at home. GA Southern averages 71.3 points, led by Nicole Gwynn's 13.3 ppg. Picked to finish 12th out of the 14-team league, the Eagles are helmed by 2024 WBCA Division II National Coach of the Year, Hana Haden, in her first season in Statesboro.
