WASHINGTON - Entering play Wednesday night at the Smith Center a perfect 2-0 at home on the young season, the George Washington women's basketball team was sure to close the night the same way. In a 69-57 win against their visitors from Towson, the GW Revs improved to 3-0 at home in the first of a five-game homestand that will extend into December.
The teams were even through the first quarter at 16-16 until GW surged ahead in the second with a 20-12 advantage in the stanza to take an eight-point lead into the break.
Makayla Andrews led the way for GW with 16 points, while Filipa Calisto was also massive in the win. The junior college transfer from Mozambique tallied 14 points, the biggest of which came with 1:30 to play when she banked in a three-pointer from the top of the key to extend a seven-point cushion into double digits. Calisto backed up her 11-point outing last game at Ohio with a new Division I career-high at home. Her explosion of 25 points in the last two games comes after averaging 3.0 ppg in the first three contests of her D1 career.
Double-doubling for the first time in her career, Sara Lewis had a game-high tying 10 rebounds, along with 14 points of her own.
Also crucial in the win was the trademark 'D' played by Caroline McCombs' coached units, as Towson struggled through a .349 shooting night. The visitors particularly floundered in the final stanza, as the Revolutionary defense clamped down further to thwart any comeback attempt from Towson, with the Tigers being limited to just 3-of-15 field goal makes in the fourth quarter.
McCombs pressed all the right buttons Wednesday, bringing Lewis, Paige Mott and Gabby Reynolds off the bench for the first time this season, and the trio responded by keying a reserve effort that outdid their Tiger counterparts 29-6 in bench scoring.
Georgia Southern looms next for GW in a 12:00 p.m. tip at the Smith Center Saturday.
