ATHENS, Ohio – The George Washington women's basketball team suffered a 52-40 setback at Ohio on Saturday afternoon. The Revolutionaries shot a season-low 27% from the floor in the loss.
Neither team got out to a hot start offensively, combining for just 20 points in the first quarter. GW didn't tally its first field goal until three minutes into the game, a three-pointer from the right wing from Makayla Andrews.
The Bobcats, who were searching for their first win of the season going into Saturday, held a 13-7 lead following the first quarter. After GW worked itself back down by two at 13-11, OU ripped off nine-straight points to lead 22-11 midway through the second. GW weathered the storm despite not finding consistent offense, holding the Bobcats to just two more points the rest of the quarter and cutting the deficit to 24-18 at the break.
Out of the halftime break, Ohio used an 11-3 run over the first four minutes of the quarter to grow its largest lead of the day at 35-21. The Buff & Blue whittled the lead down to single digits in the final minutes of the third, trailing 41-32 heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth was much of the same, as Ohio's offense ripped off five points in a row to take a 46-32 lead. GW was held to just eight points in the final frame, marking the first time this season the Revolutionaries were held in single digits in multiple quarters of the same contest. Ohio got just enough on offense to withstand any thought of a GW comeback, winning by a final tally of 52-40.
Filipa Calisto got into double figures with 11 points and four rebounds for the first time in her GW career. The junior transfer shot 5-for-8 from the floor and 1-for-3 from deep. Mariona Planes Fortuny put up 10 points for GW in the paint, connecting on five field goals in the contest. Sara Lews led GW on the glass with nine boards, while Gabby Reynolds dished out a team-best six assists. Reynolds was held without a field goal for the first time in her young collegiate career.
The Buff & Blue return to the Smith Center on Wednesday, hosting Towson at 6:00 p.m. Live coverage of the contest will be available locally on the Monument Sports Network, as well as ESPN+.
