WASHINGTON – Following a road loss at Saint Joseph's last Wednesday, the George Washington women's basketball team returns to the Smith Center for a mid-week clash against Duquesne. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m., Wednesday evening, with live coverage available on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite a strong start offensively, the George Washington women's basketball team fell into a second half shooting slump and couldn't recover, dropping the team's first road A-10 contest of the season to Saint Joseph's, 67-47.
In the opening quarter, grad student Nya Lok kickstarted the Revolutionaries' offense, scoring 10 of the team's 14 points through the opening frame. Lok finished 4-5 from the field in the quarter, including a 2-2 mark from long range. As a team, the Buff & Blue finished 6-12 (50%) from the field, the best shooting percentage by quarter the squad would register all night. Despite the strong effort, GW still trailed 18-14 heading into the second.
Both teams played evenly in the second quarter, finishing in a 13-13 deadlock to make the score 31-27 at the break. Out of halftime, Lok knocked down a triple from the top of the arc that cut the Hawks' lead to 31-30, but that would be as close as GW would get for the rest of the night. Saint Joseph's proceeded to use a 16-0 run that kept GW scoreless for over seven minutes. SJU's lead blossomed to 52-32 at the end of the third, their largest lead up to that point in the contest.
GW wouldn't go away quietly, slowly chipping away at the large deficit and eventually whittled it down to 14 points at 56-42 with 6:30 left in the fourth, but Saint Joseph's closed the game on an 11-5 run to slam the door on GW's comeback bid.
STANDOUT DEFENSE
Through 14 games this season, GW has the 16th ranked defense in the country, allowing just 53.4 points per contest. The Buff & Blue rank third in the conference, joining the SEC as the only other conference with three teams in the top 20 in defensive rating. VCU currently ranks fourth in the country allowing just 50.9 points, while Davidson clocks in at 14th with 53.2 points allowed per night.
SCOUTING THE DUKES
Duquesne enters Wednesday's contest with an identical 7-7 overall record after falling to George Mason, 101-75, on Sunday afternoon. The Dukes hold a conference record of 2-1, defeating Dayton 70-42 on Dec. 30, and Fordham 75-73 on Dec. 5 in overtime. Duquesne is led by 11th-year head coach Dan Burt who became Duquesne's all-time winningest coach on Dec. 10, 2022, with a 56-54 victory over Vermont, his 177th victory at the helm of the program.
On the court, Duquesne is led by Megan McConnell who averages team-highs with 12.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists per contest.
