Women's Basketball Can't Keep Pace With Dukes, Falls 71-54

The George Washington women's basketball team and visiting Duquesne Dukes renewed acquaintances Wednesday night in DC, after last engaging in a thrilling affair in the A-10 Championship last season, won by GW.
Through the first 14 games of the season, GW boasted the 16th ranked defense in the country, allowing just 53.4 points per contest, but paced by do-it-all All-Conference guard Megan McConnell, who leads her team in points, rebounds, assists and steals per game, and leads the nation in minutes per game, Duquesne found offense easier than most teams who enter Foggy Bottom.
After GW carved a Dukes' lead to just two, 48-46, on a Nya Robertson three-pointer with 3:06 to play in the third, Duquesne went on an 11-0 that spanned the third and fourth quarters, until Robertson finally broke through again with a pair of free throws almost seven minutes later with just over seven minutes to play. The visitors' lead would swell to 19 at its largest, making the final outcome seem far different than the tight bout that was waged for almost three quarters.
Robertson and Nya Lok combined for 33 of GW's 54 points, but Duquesne put four in double figures, all with at least 12. While McConnell's final line (12 points, six rebounds, two assists, three steals, two blocks in 39 minutes) tells some of the story, it was the pace and game flow that Duquesne controlled that limited and pressured GW's bigs, hindering what the Buff and Blue could do inside while starting center Maren Durant battled foul trouble.
GW was outshot .452 to .327, outrebounded 42-32, and outdone in the interior by ceding a 32-20 edge in points in paint. Perhaps not-so-coincidentally, the 17-point edge the Dukes' enjoyed in points off turnovers, parlaying GW's 20 miscues into 26 points on the other end, could be found in the game's final margin.
Lok finished with a team-high eight assists, while fellow grad student Mayowa Taiwo had a team-high four assists, to go with her five boards and seven points. GW led briefly at 14-12 in the later stages of the first quarter, before trailing 16-14 after one and 35-32 at the half.
The GW Revs will look for their first A-10 win Sunday at St. Bonaventure, The Bonnies entered play Wednesday at 1-2 in the conference and 3-10 overall. Tip at the Reilly Center comes at 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
