OLEAN, N.Y. – Despite frigid temperatures and blustery conditions outside, the George Washington women's basketball team kept the Reilly Center warm and still with hot second-half shooting to down the Bonnies on Sunday afternoon, 78-62.
Leading the charge for GW was sophomore Nya Robertson, who got things started by knocking down five-straight triples in the first six minutes of the game. Graduate Nya Lok also added a basket for GW in the first quarter, putting the Buff & Blue ahead 17-15 after the first quarter. Robertson's 15 first-quarter points all came via the deep ball, equaling the offensive output for St. Bonaventure in the opening frame.
A team that has typically struggled to produce in the second quarter, GW couldn't put any distance between themselves and the Bonnies despite the hot start. St. Bonaventure outscored the GW Revs 20-18 in the quarter, knotting the score at 35 apiece heading into the break. Like many times this season, the Buff & Blue came out of the locker room red hot, torching St. Bonaventure with a 14-3 run to open the third quarter with Robertson, Lok and graduate Essence Brown all getting in on the action. Despite the double-digit lead and GW holding the momentum, St. Bonaventure weathered the storm and trimmed the deficit down to three with just under a minute left in the quarter. Senior Asjah Inniss proceeded to knock down two straight three-pointers, including one right before the buzzer, to push GW's lead back up to nine heading into the fourth.
In the final stanza GW didn't look back, using an 11-0 run in the latter part of the quarter to put St. Bonaventure away and cruise to the victory. Leading the way was Robertson, who finished with a career-high 31 points and three assists. Robertson tops her previous career-high of 30 points which was set at Towson earlier this season. Lok also put together a solid performance with 16 points and eight rebounds. Inniss tallied 14 points and seven rebounds for GW, while Brown notched six points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
With her eighth rebound in the contest, graduate student Mayowa Taiwo moved into fifth on GW's all-time rebounding leaderboard. Taiwo passes Kas Allen '88 who recorded 878 rebounds in her four-year career. Next up on Taiwo's hunt for the record is 2021 WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones who sits fourth on GW's all-time rankings with 961 career boards.
GW's road trip continues on Wednesday at Dayton. Tip-off with the Flyers is set for 7:00 p.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+.
