WASHINGTON – Following a Wednesday night clash with Duquesne inside the Smith Center, the George Washington women's basketball team travels north to St. Bonaventure for a matinee contest with the Bonnies on Sunday. Tip-off is slated for 12:00 p.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
GW suffered its second home loss of the season Wednesday night, falling to Duquesne, 71-54. The Buff & Blue were paced by standout sophomore Nya Robertson, who poured in 17 points off GW's bench. Grad student Nya Lok also filled the stat sheet, tallying 16 points and collecting a team-high eight rebounds. The duo of Nyas accounted for 33 of GW's 54 points on the night and 10 of the team's 17 field goals.
Duquesne was paced by All-Conference guard Megan McConnell, who controlled the pace of play as the Dukes' floor general. McConnell turned in 12 points, six rebounds and two assists to move Duquesne to 3-1 in conference play this season. Also putting together solid performances were Gabby Grantham-Medley with 13 points and Amaya Hamilton with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
TAIWO'S REBOUND CLIMB
After tallying five rebounds against Duquesne, Mayowa Taiwo now has 871 career boards. Taiwo is just seven rebounds away from tying Kas Allen for fifth on GW's all-time rebound leaderboard. Taiwo is just 129 rebounds and 156 points away from eclipsing 1,000 in each category. If Taiwo were to reach the mark in both she would become just the third player in program history to achieve the feat (Darlene Saar '95 and Caira Washington '17).
LOK'S CAREER MILESTONE
Following Wednesday night's 16-point performance, Lok has 937 points in her collegiate career. Lok transferred to GW following her sophomore season at Midland College in Texas. While at Midland, Lok registered 465 points, averaging 10.3 points per game for the Chaps. Since transferring to GW, Lok has tallied 472 points through two and a half seasons in Foggy Bottom. Lok averages 7.0 points per game for the Buff & Blue in 120 games played. She's just 63 points away from 1,000 for her career with 15 regular season games left this year.
SCOUTING THE BONNIES
St. Bonaventure enters Sunday's matchup with a 4-11 record and a 1-3 mark in the A-10. The Bonnies' lone conference win of the season came against Loyola Chicago on Dec. 30, an 84-72 triumph. St. Bonaventure fell to La Salle on Wednesday night at home, dropping the contest 75-71 and moving its losing streak to three games. The Bonnies are led by head coach Jim Crowley, who's in his second stint at the helm of the program. Crowley previously held the same title at St. Bonaventure from 2000-16 before leaving to take over Providence's women's basketball program. While in his first stint, Crowley was named the ESPN.com National Coach of the Year in 2012 and was also a three-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year (2009, 2012 & 2014). Crowley ranks sixth all-time in career A-10 women's basketball victories with 109 and holds a career record of 386-406 in 27 years as a head coach.
Historically, GW has been dominant against St. Bonaventure, leading the all-time series 41-9. The 41 wins is the fourth-most wins over a single opponent in program history, only behind Duquesne (59), Rhode Island (44) and Massachusetts (43). GW's long history with the Bonnies also includes the largest winning streak over one opponent as GW beat St. Bonaventure 26-straight times from 1990-2007. In recent years GW has won seven of the last 10 meetings including three straight.
This season, the Bonnies are led by Dani Haskell who averages 13.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Haskell shoots the ball at a 36.5% clip and leads the team in free throw percentage at 88.4% on the year. Also playing well is Nadechka Laccen who averages 11.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
