WASHINGTON – Following a 60-55 loss at Fordham on Saturday, the George Washington women's basketball team looks to return to form against Rhode Island. Tip-off for Wednesday's contest is slated for 6 p.m. at the Smith Center with live coverage available on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
GW suffered the loss at Fordham after falling into an early hole. The Rams outscored GW in the first three quarters of the game, building a 44-36 lead heading into the fourth. GW made things interesting, evening the score at 55, but it wasn't enough as the Rams protected home court and picked up the victory. The win snapped a five-game skid for Fordham, while the lose extended GW's losing streak to four contests. Sophomore Nya Robertson was the lone Revolutionary to score in double figures, tallying 19 points and pulling down four rebounds. Junior Maxine Engel registered nine points on three 3-pointers, while graduate Nya Lok poured in six points, with four rebounds and four assists.
LOK HITS MILESTONE
At Fordham, a 3-point jumper at the 7:43 mark in the first quarter boosted Lok over the 1,000-point mark for her collegiate career. Lok, who spent the first two seasons of her career at Midland College in Texas, tallied 465 points in 45 total games played with the Chaps. Since arriving in Foggy Bottom prior to the 2021-22 season, Lok has been a mainstay in GW's rotation, appearing in 63 total games and registering 537 total points. Lok averages 9.3 ppg across her five-year collegiate career and looks to add to that total in GW's remining slate of games this season. Prior to Wednesday's game against Rhode Island, Lok will be recognized for her accomplishment at midcourt.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Led by fifth-year head coach Tammi Reiss, the Rhode Island women's basketball team enters Wednesday's contest with a 14-8 overall record and a 6-3 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Rams have won two-straight contests, including a most recent 63-48 triumph over Massachusetts. Under Reiss' guidance, Rhode Island has amassed an 86-46 record in five seasons. The two-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year and two-time National Coach of the Week has led her team to two WNIT appearances and three-straight winning seasons.
Rhode Island's three conference loses have come via a combined 12 points, with the largest loss being a five-point defeat to Loyola Chicago. The Rams are outscoring opponents by an average of 9.5 ppg and boast the third-best scoring defense in the conference, holding opponents to just 54.1 points per night. GW holds a commanding 44-9 lead in the all-time series, the second-most wins against a single school in program history. Despite the historical dominance, the Rams have controlled recent matchups, winning the past three. Prior to those three setbacks, GW had won the 25 of the last 27 meetings.
On the court, Rhode Island is led by Maye Toure who averages team-highs in points (13.6) and rebounds (7.5). Toure shoots the ball at a 44.6% clip and averages 1.1 steals per game as well. Sophie Phillips puts in 12.2 ppg for the Rams, while Teisha Hyman averages 11.6 ppg. Hyman leads the team in steals, averaging 1.8 per game.
