Women's Basketball Can’t Keep Up With Rhode Island, Falls 66-52
1/31/2024 8:50:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The GW Revs hosted Rhode Island on Dean's List Night at the Smith Center, looking to avenge a setback to the Rams in last year's A-10 Championship Tournament that knocked George Washington out of the title hunt. Picked in the preseason to win the conference and returning All A-10 selection Mayé Touré, the Rams looked the part of a conference powerhouse in a 66-52 win.
GW started the contest on a 6-0 run and kept URI off the board for nearly five minutes to open the game to assume a 15-10 lead after the first stanza. The Rams rallied in the second to knot the game at 26 at the break, but the third quarter wasn't kind to the hosts.
Rhode Island used a 24-9 third quarter advantage to take a 15-point lead into the final ten minutes and GW couldn't find the firepower to come back.
Touré came to GW averaging a team-high 13.6 points per game and was limited to eight by the GDUB D, but six other Rams netted at least a half-dozen in a game that wasn't within single-digits after Rhode Island's third quarter surge. While the Rams didn't win the turnover battle by much with 16 turnovers forced compared to 10 of their own, they were more efficient cashing in those miscues on the other end with an 18-3 points-off-turnovers edge in the 14-point victory.
Nya Robertson continued to fill it up for George Washington, topping all scorers with 23 points. The super soph connected on 8-of-14 shots, including 4-of-6 from deep, as the lone GW Rev in double figures.
