WASHINGTON – Following a two-game road trip, the George Washington women's basketball team returns to the Smith Center on Saturday afternoon, hosting Saint Louis at 2 p.m. Coverage of the A-10 battle will be carried live on Monumental Sports Network and ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
The GW Revs finished 1-1 on their road swing which included contests at St. Bonaventure and Dayton. The Buff & Blue opened the trip with a 78-62 victory over St. Bonaventure last Sunday. The Revolutionaries were paced by sophomore Nya Robertson with a career-high 31 points including six 3-pointers made.
At Dayton, GW slipped into an early first quarter deficit and couldn't rebound, falling to the Flyers, 71-53. Neither team got out to a stellar offensive start, struggling to find consistency in the early minutes. GW grabbed a two-point lead via a 3-pointer from Robertson, but that would be the final advantage for the Revolutionaries all night. Robertson was a bright spot for the Buff & Blue, continuing her solid stretch of offensive play and finishing with a game-high 22 points. After Dayton recaptured the lead at 9-8, the Flyers didn't look back. Dayton used an 11-4 run to build a 20-12 advantage after the first, and outscored GW 20-13 in the second period to hold a commanding 40-25 lead at the break. Dayton's timely shot making and aggressiveness on the boards allowed the Flyers to maintain a double-digit lead for the entire second half. The Buff & Blue made things interesting midway through the third, cutting the Flyers' lead to 11 via a 3-pointer from graduate Nya Lok, but that's the closest GW would get the rest of the night.
ROBERTSON'S HOT HAND
Through 14 games played this season, Robertson averages a career-high 17.5 points per contest, placing her second in the A-10 in scoring. The only player in the conference to average more is Fordham's Taylor Donaldson, who edges the top spot by 0.1 with a ppg average of 17.6. Robertson is shooting the ball at a 38.2% clip, up from her field-goal percentage of 35.3% during her rookie season a year ago. She also has enjoyed improvements in her three-point percentage (35.1%), rebounds per game (3.1) and assists per game (1.8) when compared to last year's averages.
SCOUTING THE BILLIKENS
Saint Louis returns to the DMV following a 91-61 loss at George Mason on Wednesday night. The Billikens sit at 7-12 overall this season and hold a 2-4 conference record with wins over Dayton and Massachusetts under their belt. The reigning A-10 Tournament Champions are led by second-year head coach Rebecca Tillett. During Tillett's first season at the helm, she guided Saint Louis to the program's first A-10 Tournament title and the team's first NCAA Tournament berth. Tillett is in her sixth season as a Division I head coach, amassing a 75-98 overall record. Prior to her tenure with the Billikens, Tillett served as head coach of Longwood's women's basketball program, amassing a 51-68 overall record and a trip to the 2022 NCAA Tournament, where they defeated Mount St. Mary's in the first round.
GW holds a 12-7 advantage over SLU in the all-time series, dating back to the program's first matchup in 2006. The Buff & Blue dominated the Billikens in early matchups, winning eight of the first nine meetings. Despite GW holding the all-time series lead, Saint Louis has enjoyed success as of late, winning five of the past seven meetings against the Revolutionaries.
On the court, SLU is led by Kyla McMakin who averages a team-high 16.4 points per contest. McMakin also grabs 2.8 rebounds per games and shoots the ball at a 37.3% clip. McMakin transferred to SLU from Longwood with Tillett and has won back-to-back conference titles the past two seasons. Peyton Kennedy averages 13.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game for the Billikens, while Brooklyn Gray puts in 11.3 points per night. Tierra Simon leads the team in rebounding this season at 6.8 per game, while Julia Martinez grabs 5.7 boards per night.
