In one of the best traditions at the George Washington University, Special Athletics Commencement was held on Tuesday afternoon in Betts Theatre in the University Student Center.
With all the pomp and circumstance of a proper Commencement ceremony, the graduates - all members of the GW baseball team, who will be competing at St. Bonaventure this week and will thus miss graduating with their classmates - marched into the theatre in a processional, followed by the National Anthem and remarks from Provost Christopher Bracey.
Student speaker Steve DiTomaso then took center stage, regaling the attendees of families and friends with heartfelt memories of his baseball brothers and their special shared times at GW.
While telling stories of his and his teammates maturation throughout the years, DiTomaso urged to "find the good in every situation and everything will work out," eliciting laughter and knowing nods from the assemblage.
After DiTomaso brought the house down, the university's 18th President, Mark S. Wrighton, in his final Commencement Week with the Buff and Blue, charged the graduates to bring to life the same ambitions that they originally brought to George Washington.
Later, as he conferred degrees to DiTomaso, Anthony Frechette, Connor Harris, Chris Knight, Logan Koester, Michael Kohn, Logan Leax, Noah Levin and Austin Odell, the grads flipped the tassels adorning their caps from right to left as the first members of the university's Class of 2023, surely doing what their teammate implored, "vividly imagining success."
