Former Buff & Blue hurler is one of five GW alums playing professionally
WASHINGTON -Â GW baseball alum Trevor Kuncl will re-sign with the Lake Erie Crushers of the Frontier League for his second professional season. As a result, Kuncl has resigned from his post as director of baseball operations.
The former Buff & Blue closer, who is third all-time in GW history with 16 saves, was a member of the Crushers last season and appeared in 28 games in the independent league last season, going 2-0 with a 3.55 ERA and one save in 38 innings.
He is the second Colonial to sign a contract in the Frontier League this season, joining infielder Steve Barmakian, who inked a deal with the Empire State Greys in February. Barmakian, a member of the class of 2021, played the last two seasons with the Idaho Falls Chukars in the Pioneer, an MLB Partner independent league. He hit .345 in 138 games, racking up 50 doubles and 167 runs scored in two years.
Barmakian's former teammate in Idaho Falls, Keagan McGinnis, will return to the Pioneer League for a third season, this time with the Billings Mustangs. McGinnis has appeared in 67 games over the last two seasons, piling up 118 strikeouts in just 81.2 innings.
GW will also have two alums playing in Minor League Baseball, with their respective seasons beginning on Friday. Cade Fergus, a 13th round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies last season, will open his first full season in the minors with the Single-A Clearwater Threshers after appearing in 29 games at the level last year.
Harrison Cohen, who signed a free agent contract with the New York Yankees in August, will begin his minor league career with the Single-A Tampa Tarpons, in the same league as Fergus.
