McKeever nets six goals to lead all scorers
WASHINGTON – Boosted by a season-high 19 goals, GW lacrosse cruised to a 19-8 victory over the visiting Delaware State Hornets on Wednesday afternoon. The season-high marked the team's most goals scored since the Buff & Blue scored 20 at VCU on April 17, 2016.
Kerry McKeever scored six goals in the win, one goal shy of equaling the program record for most goals scored in a single game. The last GW player to score six in a contest was Rachel Mia vs. George Mason on April 18, 2014.
McKeever began the scoring just 40 seconds into the contest off a feed from Katelyn Walker. Two more tallies from Kianah Watson and McKeever put the home team up three before the Hornets got on the board at the 11-minute mark. Five more goals for the Buff & Blue closed out the first quarter with a sizable seven-goal lead for GW.Â
Delaware State got two back in the opening minutes of quarter two, but GW quickly silenced any sign of a comeback attempt, outscoring Delaware State 5-0 to head into halftime up 13-3. GW had already surpassed its season-best goal tally after 30 minutes of play.
The offense continued to click in quarter three, with three-straight goals from Watson, Walker and McKeever, extending GW's lead to 13. The Hornets tallied four-straight to answer, but the established lead and goals from first-years Kiki Rotay, Grace Curry and Emma Curry lifted GW to a dominant 19-8 victory; GW's first on home turf this season.
