Buff and Blue to play four games on road this week
WASHINGTON - GW softball continues its spring slate this week with four road games. The Buff and Blue will play Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday (3 p.m.), followed by a weekend series at Saint Louis on Saturday (1 p.m. and 3 p.m. ET) and Sunday (1 p.m. ET).
LAST WEEK RECAP
The Colonials went 2-2 in four games at home last week. GW bested Morgan State in a 6-2 win on Wednesday and saw Rose Cano pick up her ninth win of the campaign and Alena Ramirez collect a game-high three RBI.
Over the weekend, GW kicked off the A-10 slate with a visit from Rhode Island for a three-game set. The teams split Saturday's doubleheader, which included a 9-0 Colonials' run-rule win that was capped off by Ashely Corpuz's second walk-off home run of the season. Rhode Island then picked up the win in the series finale on Sunday.
LEADOFF SUCCESS
Arizona Ritchie has found a home this season batting in the leadoff role. The graduate transfer from UVA averages just over one run per game (1.05) and has accounted for nearly a fourth of GW's runs scored. She ranks first in the A-10 and 31st in the NCAA in runs per game.
ABOUT THE MOUNTAINEERS
Mount St. Mary's enters Wednesday's contest at 10-12 overall, which includes a 7-2 record at home. The Mountaineers are yet to begin conference play, but they rank first in the MAAC in ERA (2.73) and shutouts (4).
Abigayle Perry leads the Mountaineers in OBP (.475) and gets on-base in nearly half of her at-bats, thanks in-part to her 19 walks. Avery Neuhart posts a 1.43 ERA and has been Mount's top-option in the circle.
SCOUTING SAINT LOUIS
The Billikens are out to a 9-16 start this season but are 3-0 in A-10 play after three five-inning run-rule wins over St. Bonaventure. Saint Louis pitcher Chloe Wendling highlighted the series with a no-hitter in game one against the Bonnies.
The Billikens ride the arm of Wendling often - she has appeared in 18 games in the circle this season and is 8-8 with a 3.78 ERA. Gabbie Kowalik leads Saint Louis in nearly every hitting category this season and has lofty numbers. Kowalik gets on-base in over half of her at-bats and has team-highs average (.416), OBP (.521), hits (32), doubles (6), triples (2), RBI (21) and home runs (4), among other stats.
