Bullpen Squanders Late Lead in Extra Innings Setback, 12-4

ARLINGTON, Va. - What started out in spectacular fashion for GW baseball exploded into an extra innings blowout as the Buff and Blue wasted an exceptional performance from Teddy Brennan in his first career start. Having entered the day with 10.2 innings on the mound under his belt this season, and having yielded nine earned runs with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 7:10, the sophomore southpaw from Glen Cove, N.Y., played the role of "next man up" brilliantly for an injury-ravaged GW pitching staff. He authored six splendid innings without allowing a run, fanning nine without issuing a free pass and was in line for his first career win.
Niagara had other ideas, plating two in the top of the seventh to draw within one at 3-2, and after a scoreless eighth the game went to ninth with the home club clinging to the narrow lead. A leadoff home run in the top of the ninth by the Purple Eagles equalized the ballgame, then after GW saw two runners stranded in the bottom of the inning, the game went to extra innings tied at 3.
That's when the floodgates opened and GW saw nine Niagara players cross the plate in the 10th for a deflating loss.
Anthony Frechette was the hitting star for George Washington Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the fourth and a bases loaded walk in the fifth to account for all of his team's RBIs.
The clubs will meet again in the rubber game of the series, with first pitch at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park coming at noon.
