Women's Basketball Throttles Mason, 58-39

Nya Robertson and Mia Lakstigala both hit double figures in victory
WASHINGTON - Cheered on by dozens of the most decorated alumnae in program history who built GW women's basketball into a powerhouse, the 2022-23 team put on a show for their predecessors. In a dismantling of their nearby rival, George Mason, the Buff and Blue led by two after the first quarter, 13 at intermission, and 21 after three, en route to the runaway 58-39 win.
It was during a 16-0 scoring run in the second quarter that the rivalry turned into a rout.
The victory marked GW's fifth-straight as the GDUB surge up the conference standings has been a steamroller with five games left in the regular season. As it has been all season, the grad student/first-year tandem of Mia Lakstigala and Nya Roberston led the way in the scoring column, while the tenacity of senior Mayowa Taiwo all over the floor catalyzed the group. In her bid for conference Rookie of the Year honors, Robertson dropped in a game-high 18 points, combining with Lakstigala (11 points) to bury seven three-pointers. Taiwo, meanwhile, was her double-double self, finishing with 10 points and a team-leading nine rebounds, just a board shy of another double-double, showing off her prowess on the glass to the gathered alumnae there for Homecoming as one of the best rebounders in program history.
GW turned 15 Patriot turnovers into 14 points on the other end, out-rebounded their foe 46-37, and all together used a stifling defense that held Mason to .288 shooting and just .176 from three-point range to parlay defensive stops into momentum and buckets on the other end.
Up next for the club is a major matchup at Rhode Island on Wednesday night at 6pm on ESPN+. Powers collide in Kingston with the Rams coming into play at 10-0 in the A-10 this season, atop the conference standings.
