Women’s Basketball Drops Road Test to Rhode Island, 64-47

Mayowa Taiwo and Nya Lok each score 12 points
KINGSTON, R.I. – On the day that URI was named NCAA women's basketball's Team of the Week, the Rams showed the fans at the Ryan Center why. URI's defense smothered the Colonials' 3-point attack, holding them to just 11 percent from long range en route to a 64-47 win over George Washington.
GW began Wednesday's game looking to take it to the Atlantic 10's top team, and in the first quarter they showed some success in transition. After being down 7-2 just minutes in, the Colonials used an 8-2 run to go up 10-9. Unfortunately, it didn't take Rhode Island's offense long to nail a pair of threes and retake the lead at 15-10.
In the second quarter, the Rhody attack continued to light up Kingston, firing at a 50 percent clip and outscoring GDUB, 23-10. The Rams put an exclamation point on the half when Ines Debroise hit a halfcourt shot with 1.5 seconds left to put URI up 18.
Following halftime, GW's defense found a way to slow down the Rams, holding them to just a 20 percent shooting clip in the third quarter. However, Rhody continued to keep the GW offense quiet and made enough shots to keep the lead at double figures going into the final 10 minutes.
The final quarter proved to be GW's best of the night as the team connected on six field goals, but GW was never able to get closer than 13 points and Rhode Island closed out the win.
Individually, Nya Lok and Mayowa Taiwo led GW with 12 points apiece, while Rhode Island was led by a 26-point, 14-rebound double-double from Maya Toure.
Up next, GW will play its penultimate road game of the regular season when it travels to Saint Louis to take on the Billikens. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11 at 8 p.m.
