Nya Robertson leads all scorers with 25 points
WASHINGTON – On the afternoon that George Washington women's basketball honored seven seniors for their contributions to the program, Nya Robertson made sure to remind everyone at the Charles E. Smith Center that the future is bright. The first-year scored a game-high 25 points and helped power GW past Loyola Chicago on Senior Day, 61-50.
Saturday began with a ceremony honoring Jayla Thornton, Mia Lakstigala, Nya Lok, Sheslanie Laureano, Faith Blethen, Essence Brown and Mayowa Taiwo, and while emotions were running high before tip-off, it showed no effect on the Colonials' play. GW began the game on a 10-0 run and outscored Loyola Chicago 14-4 in the opening frame.
In the second quarter, the Ramblers regained their footing and poured in 20 of their 50 points, but they had no answer for Robertson. The Fort Worth native dropped 11 of her 15 first-half points in the second stanza, including a pair of threes, and helped stake GW to a 30-24 halftime lead.
After the intermission, GDUB wasted no time attempting to put the game out of reach. The Colonials exploded for 14 straight points to start the third quarter, with five different players registering points during the five-minute stretch. GW's defense was also impactful in the third frame, holding the Ramblers to just 3-of-14 from the field.
In the fourth quarter, George Washington kept Loyola Chicago at bay. Despite the Ramblers shooting 50 percent from the field, GW made key stops when it mattered, and Robertson chipped in a pair of late layups to finish off the victory.
As a team, GW fired at 41 percent from the field and knocked down seven long-range shots on Saturday. They also frustrated the Loyola Chicago downtown attack, holding them to just four threes on 21 shot attempts.
With the win, GW moves to 11-2 at the Smith Center this season. It is the most wins GW has had in a home campaign since 2016-17. GW will have a shot at one more home victory on Wednesday when it welcomes in Davidson for its home finale. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. with coverage on NBC Sports Washington and ESPN+.
