Women's Basketball Misses Opportunity vs. Davidson, 66-59

Mia Lakstigala and Nya Robertson combine for 43 points
WASHINGTON - In the all-important race for a top-4 seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Championship at Chase Fieldhouse in Wilmington, Delaware, the George Washington women's basketball team stood a chance to take a massive leap towards one of the coveted top seeds and the benefits of the double-bye straight into the quarterfinals when it hosted Davidson on Wednesday night. The visiting Wildcats had other plans.
It was the final game of the season at Smith Center for the Buff and Blue, and with an 11-2 record at home this season entering the contest, GDUB liked its chances. Fitting for a game of this magnitude, it was a battle throughout with neither side leading by more than seven. Unfortunately for the home side, that seven-point edge went the wrong way in the 66-59 setback.
The key to victory was containing Davidson's dynamic duo of Elle Sutphin (fifth in the A-10 in points per game at 16.9 ppg) and Suzi-Rose Deegan (11th in the conference with 13.7 ppg), and GW was up to the task, holding the pair just over their combined scoring average with Deegan netting 16 and Sutphin going for 15, but it wasn't enough on a night when the Davidson D held GW to 32.2 percent shooting.
George Washington's own prolific pair of Nya Robertson (14.3 ppg, 8th in the A-10) and Mia Lakstigala (13.8 ppg, 10th) engaged in a duel of anything-you-can-do-I-can-do-better with both going over 20 points, the first time the team had two 20-point scorers in the same game since 2017, but only three others found the scoring column.
Lakstigala was also big on the boards with a game-high tying 10 rebounds in the double-double effort, tying Mayowa Taiwo's performance on the boards.
The regular season finale for GW comes Saturday at conference-leading UMass, who entered play Wednesday night with a 23-4 record, including 13-1 in conference and as the winners of 12 in a row.
