The Colonials tip-off against the Minutewomen in its final tune-up before the A-10 Tournament
WASHINGTON - George Washington women's basketball is hitting the road for the final game of the regular season, a Saturday afternoon matinee against UMass. Tip-off at the Mullins Center between the Colonials and Minutewomen is set for 4:00 p.m., and the game can be streamed on ESPN3.
DOWN TO THE WIRE
With one game left before tournament seeds lock in, GW is in a three-way tie for third place in the A-10 standings. If the Colonials can remain fourth or better through the final weekend of action, they will earn an ever-coveted double-bye into the quarterfinals of the A-10 Championship. The Colonials will face a tall task in UMass, who is the current No. 1 seed in the conference and winners of 12 of its last 13. The A-10 Championship begins on Wednesday, March 1st in Wilmington, Del.
SOMETHING HAS TO GIVE
Saturday's battle at the Mullins Center is between the No. 1 ranked offense and No. 2 ranked defense in A-10 action. The Minutewomen have averaged 74.3 PPG in conference play, while GW has held conference opponents to an average of only 60.5 PPG. With a nearly 14-point differential between the averages, Saturday's game may very well be decided on that end of the court.
SCOUTING UMASS
The Minutewomen enter Saturday's contest tied with Rhode Island for the best mark in the A-10. UMass is coming off just its second conference loss of the season, a 77-75 defeat at Saint Louis. Prior to stumbling at Saint Louis, UMass was winners of 12 in a row. The Minutewomen are 11-2 against all competition at the Mullins Center, which is proving to be a tough place to win in the A-10.
UMass has four scorers who average double-figures: Sam Breen, Sydney Taylor, Ber'Nyah Mayo and Destiney Philoxy. Breen has been a huge part of UMass' success this year. She's started every game for the Minutewomen and averages a double-double with 17.7 PPG and 10.0 RPG.
