GW awaits A-10 Championship seeding
AMHERST, Mass. - A Saturday afternoon clash between two of the A-10's top teams did not go GW's way as UMass, who has the league's top-scoring offense, exploded for 84 points and grabbed the victory. GW closes the regular season with a 17-12 record (9-7 A-10) and will look ahead to next week's A-10 Championship.
Both teams started out hot from distance. UMass opened up the game on fire from 3-point land, making all seven attempted threes, while GW was 4-8 from long range in the opening frame. UMass opened up its lead mid-way through the first quarter, shooting 55% from the field in the stanza, and held a 13-point advantage after the opening 10 minutes.
GW fought back in the second frame and cut the UMass lead down to single digits, with the game getting as close as nine points near the halfway mark of the second. The Minutewomen responded with a 7-1 run of its own and went into the break holding a 17-point lead.
The second half didn't provide much in terms of relief for GW. The Minutewomen's A-10 leading offense refused to be slowed and shot 60% from the field in the third quarter, seeing its lead grow to 25 points by the end of the three frames.
GW outscored UMass 19-17 in the final frame but it wasn't enough as UMass cruised to a 84-61 victory.
Sam Breen and Destiney Philoxy combined for 38 of UMass' points, doing so as both were honored in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony. First-year Nya Robertson led the Buff and Blue with 15 points, while Nya Lok and Asjah Inniss followed closely behind with 10 points apiece.
GW will now await tournament seeding for the A-10 Championship, which begins on March 1st in Wilmington, Del.
