Colonials' defense holds Dukes to just 1-of-29 from three
WASHINGTON - With soon-to-be Hall of Famer Noelia Gomez in attendance and honored during a timeout, the Buff and Blue made sure to make their alumna proud. In a hard-fought, defensive battle with offense at a premium, GW emerged the victor in a 58-52 triumph. Now 15-8 on the year and 7-3 in conference play, George Washington is storming up the conference standings.
While Duquesne out-shot GW from the floor, .323 - .279, the GDUB D had the advantage in defending the deep ball. GW forced the Dukes into just 1-of-29 shooting from three-point range, while making seven triples of their own in the six-point victory margin. Duquesne was 0-for-15 in the second half from behind the arc in their comeback attempt, after last leading 18-16 with just under three minutes remaining in the first. Neither side led by more than nine on the night.
Mia Lakstigala provided the scoring that was needed in her career-high tying 21-point outing, connecting at an efficient 50 percent clip from the floor on a night when few found success on more than half of their tries. Most importantly, the grad transfer from Penn was 4-of-6 from long range, while also providing a critical lift on the boards from her point guard position. Lakstigala's eight rebounds aided a GW effort that saw the home club outdo their guests on the boards, 55-41, which lent itself to a 15-9 advantage in second chance points in the narrow win. Of course, it was senior Mayowa Taiwo who powered the engine on the glass, hauling down another 16 boards in her dominant season inside, now averaging 16.7 caroms in the last three contests.
Rookie sensation Nya Robertson finished with 15 points for GW, while no Duke scored more than a dozen.
Up next for GW is a rematch with George Mason on Sunday at noon on NBC Sports Washington during Homecoming, when the team looks to make it five-in-a-row in A-10 play with the league tournament on the docket a month from today.
