WASHINGTON - In the first leg of a double-dip against Coppin St. at the Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday, GW's women's basketball team handled the Eagles with a 55-41 trouncing, that started as anything but a blowout.
Coppin St. fought tough for the opening two quarters on the road and felt good going into the halftime locker room down just a point, 22-21. The Revolutionaries, on the other hand, took out their first-half frustrations on the visitors in the third, sprinting out to a 16-2 run to open the quarter and eventually extending the margin in the session to 24-6 to take a nearly 20-point lead into the closing frame, 46-27.
GDUB's patented D was the deciding factor, as the club held Coppin to a .306 field goal percentage, and just .176 from long range (3-of-17). The Eagles also didn't help themselves and struggled at the line, going just 8-of-15 (.533) at the charity stripe.
Nya Lok led the way on the offensive side of the ball, connecting at a 50 perfect clip from the floor en route to a game-high 14 points. Asjah Innis and Mayowa Taiwo put up a matching dozen, each sinking a half-dozen field goal tries. Taiwo and Innis also ripped down a game-high tying eight boards.
Essence Brown led all players with 37 minutes played in her first appearance since November 15th, and made her presence felt with nine points, while often guarding the opposition's top perimeter threat. GW showcased some depth with 13 different players seeing court time.
The game marked the first of a four-game homestand for the Revolutionaries, which will carry them through finals and into A-10 play on Dec. 30 vs. Richmond. First though, GDUB finds itself back in the friendly confines of Smith a week from today for a 2 p.m. tip vs. Hampton, live on Monumental Sports Network.
