Women’s Basketball Survives vs. Hampton, 46-40

WASHINGTON - Looking to do something it hadn't done since the start of the last decade, the George Washington women's basketball team put its perfect home record on the line Saturday afternoon vs. Hampton. At 4-0 in the Charles E. Smith Center this season entering the midday action, the GW Revs sought their first 5-0 home start since President Obama's first term in office, with the visiting Pirates trying to be a grinch.
Spurred by 12 first-half points from Essence Brown, half of her team's total in the opening 20 minutes, GW was locked-up with Hampton at the midway point, 24-24, while holding their guests without a made three-pointer. In a low-scoring second half, GW would keep its perfect mark alive, out-scoring their foe 22-16 after intermission for the first 5-0 home start since 2010-11.
The W was a patented McCombs' defensive slugfest, with George Washington riding its defense to victory. Limiting Hampton to just a .302 field goal percentage, including .167 from deep, the only thing the Revolutionaries could've done better on defense would have been to limit the Pirates' free throw tries. It was at the charity stripe where Hampton kept it close, winning the free throw battle (13-of-20, .650 to GW's 4-of-9, .444) easily.
Asjah Inniss was a do-it-all player Saturday, netting 14 points to join Brown (game-high 17 points) in double figures, while ripping down a mammoth, career-high 11 rebounds and tying for the team-lead with four assists.
In order to set a new longest-home-win-streak to open the season mark, the team has a lofty challenge, as the last club to start 6-0 at home was the 2006-07 edition, which went a perfect 13-0 in Foggy Bottom. That team earned a 5-seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.
