Women's Basketball Dismisses Stonehill, 67-34

At 11 a.m. on a brisk morning in Foggy Bottom, the George Washington women's basketball team sprinted into the holiday break by dismissing Stonehill for the semester, 67-34. The Revolutionaries opened the game by pitching a shutout in the opening frame, 15-0, and from there it was largely an exhibition as GW got to showcase its depth and develop its bench in the final three quarters while easily holding Stonehill at bay.
Grad student Essence Brown flirted with outscoring the opposition on her own, as she poured in a career-high 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including four three-pointers made, while stuffing the stat sheet in an all-around performance that also featured six rebounds, a game-high four assists, and game-high tying three steals (more than Stonehill's total of two steals).
Nine GW Revs got into the scoring act, though Brown was the only one to eclipse ten points, answering the age old commercial question, "what can Brown do for you?" As a team, the hosts sunk 45.8 percent of its attempts from three-point range (11-of-24), outdoing its performance from within the arc (13-of-37).
The defense held Stonehill at or below eight points in three of four quarters, with the lone stanza that the guests found some success being the second when they went off for a comparably whopping 21 points.
GDUB used its defense to key its offense, forcing 22 turnovers and turning that into 21 points on the other end. The win moves GW to 6-0 at home, the first time the program has won its first six home contests since the 2006-7 season. That team finished a perfect 13-0 in Foggy Bottom and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
With 12 on the home side seeing court time, including eight in double-digits in minutes, the Revolutionaries charge into A-10 play with some experience and momentum, having gone undefeated at home in non-conference action. Atlantic 10 play looms now for George Washington, with the opener a week from Saturday - December 30th - live on Monumental Sports Network at noon vs. Richmond, with Byron Kerr and GW alumna Cami Tapias on the call.
