Women's Basketball Falls to Richmond in A-10 Opener, 70-66
12/30/2023 2:30:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The George Washington women's basketball team opened A-10 play Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center by welcoming Richmond for the short drive up I95 to help ring in the coming new year. Unfortunately, the ball dropped early on GW's previously unbeaten home record in a 70-66 setback to the Spiders.
After the GW Revs fell behind 11-4 less than four minutes into the contest, George Washington woke up and exploded on a 15-0 run, holding Richmond scoreless for more than six minutes of play. After the first stanza, the home club held a 19-14 lead, paced by Nya Robertson's nine early points on her return to the lineup after last playing on Dec. 6th when she dropped in a career-high 30 points at Towson.
Grace Townsend was a supernova on the Richmond side, going off for 26 points, 22 of which came before intermission. Perhaps no play was bigger from Townsend than a strip and steal, her third of the game, with :31 seconds to play and her team clinging to a three-point lead.
The game was one of runs as after GW's 15-0 sprint early, Richmond went on to score the next 10 points and assume a 21-19 edge before going on to lead by the same amount, 37-35, at halftime. The tight first half set the stage for an affair that remained anyone's to claim in the final 20 minutes. All told, neither side led by more than nine, as the teams traded the lead three times and were tied twice, with the last of the lead changes coming after George Washington clung to a one-point, 60-59, edge with just over four minutes to play.
GW buried twice as many threes as did Richmond (10-5), helping to overcome a free throw disparity that saw the guests make more freebies (13) than the hosts attempted (12). Robertson went on to finish with a team-high 25, while Mayowa Taiwo played the full 40 minutes for a George Washington team that was finally at full strength after a series of injuries forced the team to adapt and adjust throughout non-conference play.
Up next for GDUB is a Wednesday night showdown in Philly against St. Joe's, live on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. on January 3rd.
