WASHINGTON – Following Saturday's A-10 opener with Richmond, the George Washington women's basketball team hits the road for a midweek clash with Saint Joseph's Wednesday night. Tip-off from Michael J. Hagan Arena is set for 7 p.m., with live coverage carried on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
GW returns to action after suffering its first home loss of the season Saturday afternoon against Richmond. The contest opened an 18-game conference slate that will carry the team into early March and the A-10 Championship. After Richmond got out to a hot 11-4 start in the early minutes of the game, GW ripped off 15-straight points to lead 19-14 after the first quarter. GW's run was aided by nine points from sophomore Nya Robertson who finished the contest with a team-high 25 points. Robertson makes her return to action after last playing on Dec. 6th when she dropped a career-high 30 points at Towson.
Despite the early GW lead, Richmond reclaimed a slim 37-35 lead at the break and would go on to win 70-66 inside the Smith Center behind 26 points from Grace Townsend. The win snapped GW's perfect record at home, moving the club to 6-1 in Foggy Bottom this season. The win propelled Richmond to 11-3 on the year with two of its three losses coming against Power 5 opponents. GW now sits at 7-6 on the season, snapping the team's three-game winning streak.
ROBERTSON'S OFFENSIVE TEAR
Through 10 games played this season, Robertson has enjoyed success on the offensive end, averaging 16.5 ppg, which ranks third in the A-10. This average is slightly up from her 15.9 ppg mark from last season which saw her named the A-10 Sixth Women of the Year in her rookie campaign. Robertson has also shown improvement in her shooting percentage (38.8%), three-point field goal percentage (34.1%), rebounding (3.5 rpg) and assists (2.2 asp) when compared to last year's numbers. Despite missing Robertson for three games in December, the Buff & Blue managed to weather the storm and go 3-0 in that stretch. With Robertson back, GW welcomes her offensive skills to the lineup as the team enters conference action.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Saint Joseph's enters Wednesday's matchup with a scorching 12-1 overall record and a 1-0 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks also opened A-10 play on Saturday, handing Fordham a 76-49 loss in the Bronx. SJU's lone loss of the season came against Utah who was ranked #7 nationally at the time and now sits at #15 in the AP Poll. The Hawks are led by head coach Cindy Griffin who's in her 23rd season at the helm of the program. Griffin holds a 382-306 record with SJU and boasts a 430-339 overall record in 26 years as a Division I head coach.
On the court, the Hawks are led by Tayla Brugler who averages 16.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per contest. Brugler's 16.2 points per contest ranks fifth in the A-10 and she also ranks fifth in the conference in field goal percentage, shooting the ball at a 53% clip. Laura Ziegler nearly averages a double-double for the Hawks with 13.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, while MacKenzie Smith puts in 12.2 points per contest. Ziegler ranks second in the conference in rebounding, behind Arianna Smith of Dayton who averages 11.2 boards per night. Julia Nystrom leads SJU with 34 assists on the season, averaging 2.6 per contest. GW trails Saint Joseph's in the all-time series 32-35, and have lost five of the last six contests against the Hawks.
