WASHINGTON – Following a 46-40 victory over Hampton last Saturday, the George Washington women's basketball team is set to host Stonehill for a late-morning matchup on Thursday. The team's final non-conference game of the regular season is set for 11 a.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
In the first meeting all-time between the two programs, GW got the upper hand over Hampton, defeating the Lady Pirates 46-40 on Saturday afternoon. The win moves GW's home record to a perfect 5-0, the first time GDUB has won its first five home games since the 2010-11 season. A win on Thursday would give the Revolutionaries its best home start since 2006-07, with that team finishing a perfect 13-0 in Foggy Bottom and advancing to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
Against Hampton, GW was led by grad student Essence Brown with a game-high 17 points. Brown also pulled down five rebounds and finished 7-of-12 from the field. In arguably her best game of the season, senior Asjah Innis filled the stat sheet with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. The 11 boards set a new career-high for the transfer who's in her second season in the Buff & Blue, while also connecting on a career-best 3-of-6 from 3-point range.
STOUT DEFENSE
Entering Thursday's contest, GW has held opponents to just 52.2 points per game, third-best in the A-10 and just two points behind VCU who holds the top spot at 50.5 ppg. GW has held five of its first 11 opponents this season to 50 points or less and are currently 4-1 in those contests. At home, the Revolutionaries are holding opponents to just 45.6 points, a big factor in the team's 5-0 record inside the Smith Center this season. The friendly confines of Smith have proven to be a difficult place for opposing teams to find a groove as GW holds a 482-177 (.731) record all-time in Foggy Bottom.
SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
Stonehill enters Thursday's matchup with a winless 0-11 record after falling to UAlbany, 77-38, last Saturday. The Skyhawks are in their second season of Division I competition after accepting an invitation to join the Northeast Conference prior to the 2022-23 academic year. Stonehill was previously a Division II athletic institution prior to the switch.
Stonehill is led by head coach Trisha Brown who is in her 23rd season at the helm of the program. Brown has an overall record of 412-216 with Stonehill and has led the program to 13 NCAA Tournaments, all of which were at the D-II level. Brown was named the NE10 Coach of the Year on five separate occasions and led her team to the Division II Elite Eight in 2018. Statistically, the Skyhawks are paced by Jada Thornton, who averages 9.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Thornton shoots the ball at a 28.1% clip and has started in all 11 of the team's games. Along with Thornton, Sharn Hayward averages 7.0 points and 2.4 assists per game, while Anna Boruta puts in 7.9 points per contest.
