TOWSON, Md. – Despite sophomore Nya Robertson's career-high 30 points, the George Washington women's basketball team couldn't overcome its slow first-half start, falling 68-60 to Towson on Wednesday afternoon.
Behind a raucous crowd of over 2,000 elementary and middle school students, both teams struggled to find a rhythm on the offensive end early on. The contest was promoted as Towson's STEM game, hosting over 20 various elementary and middle schools in the greater Baltimore area. After GW grabbed an early 7-6 lead midway through the opening quarter, Towson found its rhythm using a 10-2 run to take a 16-9 advantage late in the period. GW's first nine points came from Robertson who finished with 15 in the first half.
After leading for much of the first half, the Tigers held a 31-23 advantage with 4:41 left in the second. Towson closed the quarter on a 9-0 run, building a 40-23 lead heading into the halftime break. 17 points is the largest halftime deficit GW has faced this season after being outscored 22-10 in the second quarter.
GW came out of the locker room with a spark, finding its groove on offense and closing the deficit down to 11 at the 5:34 mark in the third quarter. Towson weathered the storm, holding a double-digit lead late in the third, but GW wasn't finished. Grad student Nya Lok scored five-straight points to finish the quarter, cutting the Tigers' lead to 53-47 and grabbing the momentum heading into the fourth.
The Revolutionaries managed to cut the deficit down to four on multiple occasions but couldn't get closer as Towson hung on for the 68-60 win. Robertson followed up her big first half with 15 more points in the second, giving her 30 on the day and breaking her previous career-high of 29 set in GW's season-opening win against Howard this season. Robertson also pulled down a career-high nine rebounds, justing missing the double-double on her career day. Along with Robertson, Lok also got into double figures with 15 points and five rebounds, while grad student Maren Durant finished with seven points and five rebounds. Grad student Mayowa Taiwo moved into sixth on GW's all-time rebounding leaderboard, passing Marise James '79 who finished with 840 for her career. Taiwo now has 846 career rebounds, just 33 away from passing Kas Allen '88 for fifth on GW's all-time list.
The Revolutionaries are back in action Saturday to host Coppin State at 2 p.m. The contest marks Karaoke Day for the Buff & Blue and will be followed by the men's basketball game at 6 p.m. Fans who wish to attend both games will need to purchase separate tickets for both contests. Live coverage for both games will be available on ESPN+.
