WASHINGTON – Following a mid-week contest at Towson on Wednesday, the George Washington women's basketball team returns home for a 2 p.m. contest with Coppin State on Saturday. The matchup opens a four-game homestand for GW that stretches to the A-10 season-opener on Dec. 30 against Richmond. Live coverage for Saturday's contest will be available on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite a strong second half, the Revolutionaries couldn't overcome its early struggles, falling to Towson 68-60 on Wednesday afternoon. The Buff & Blue struggled to find an early rhythm, falling behind by 17 points at the break. GW whittled the Tiger lead down to four on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter but couldn't complete the comeback.
Despite the loss, sophomore Nya Robertson put together a career-day for the Buff & Blue. Robertson tallied a career-high 30 points, pulled down a career-best nine rebounds and recorded 12 field goals made which was also a new personal best. Robertson's 30 points narrowly eclipsed her previous record of 29 which she tallied in GW's season-opening win against Howard earlier this year.
TAIWO CONTINUES REBOUND CLIMB
Grad student Mayowa Taiwo continued her climb up GW's all-time rebounding leaderboard. With her first rebound against Towson, Taiwo surpassed Marise James '79 for sixth on the all-time list. Taiwo now has 846 career boards, just 33 away from passing Kas Allen '88 for fifth. Taiwo also sits just 154 rebounds and 199 points away from eclipsing 1,000 in each category. If Taiwo were to achieve both, she would become just the third player in program history to achieve the feat (Darlene Saar '95 and Caira Washington '17).
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Coppin State enters Saturday's contest sitting at 3-7 following a 49-43 loss to North Florida on Monday. The Eagles have lost four games in a row with their last win coming against Pitt on Nov. 21. Coppin State is 0-2 against Atlantic 10 schools this season, falling to La Salle 73-68 in the team's season-opener, and dropping a 70-38 contest to George Mason on Nov. 26. The Eagles are led by head coach Jermaine Woods, who is in his second season at the helm of the program. Woods holds a record of 11-29 as head coach of the Eagles and a 28-55 overall mark including the two seasons he spent as an assistant coach with the program from 2020-22.
The Eagles are led by Laila Lawrence who averages 13.5 points per contest. Lawrence also grabs a team-high 8.4 rebounds and dishes out 2.7 assists per game. Along with Lawrence, Faith Blackstone has emerged as a top option for the Eagle offense, averaging 13.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
