The nation's first HBCU had a tall task in DC Thursday, facing its first NCAA Division 1 opponent of the season. For its part, GW did what it should.
Jumpstarted by a Maren Durant nine-point surge to open the Revolutionaries' night, the Buff and Blue led 21-3 after the opening quarter. A 24-0 run that took the contest from 4-3 early in the first to 28-3 in the second was just a hint of what was to come, as GDUB went into the halftime locker room leading 44-10. Furthermore, Durant went into the break leading 11-10 on her own.
While the Wolves would catch Durant in the third, Maxine Engel, Caia Loving and Kamari Sims ensured that Cheyney wouldn't get within a whiff of the home team, as Engel went on to finish with a career-high 21 points, with Sims (15 points, 5-of-10 3pt. FG) and Loving (15 points, 10 rebounds) just behind in the 61-point mollywopping. The output for Sims and Loving were also career-highs, while Natalia Sierra-Vargas registered four points on the night, the first points of her collegiate career.
GW largely put up video game numbers, featuring:
The program gets back to the Division 1 norm Wednesday at Towson (11 a.m. on FloHoops), the team's lone road game in a six-game stretch that extends to the A-10 opener at the end of December.
