WASHINGTON – Following the team's trip to the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout last week, the George Washington women's basketball team returns home to host Cheyney on Thursday night. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
GW traveled south to the Island of Enchantment last week to take part in the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout hosted in San Juan. GW played in three contests, battling with West Virginia, Southern Illinois and Charlotte. Over the three-game span, sophomore Nya Robertson led the team in scoring at 10.3 points per contest. Robertson started all three games for the Buff & Blue, shooting 36.1% from the field during the trip. Also playing well for GW were grad students Maren Durant and Mayowa Taiwo. Durant averaged 6.7 points and 7.0 boards per game on 52.9% shooting from the field, while Taiwo finished with averages of 5.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
TAIWO CLIMBS THE REBOUNDING LEADERBOARD
While in Puerto Rico, Taiwo continued her climb on GW's all-time rebounding list, moving into seventh with 832 career boards. During the trip, Taiwo passed Tara Booker '13 and Kristin McArdle '92 in the rankings. Taiwo is just eight rebounds away from tying Marise James' '79 mark of 840 boards, which is sixth in program history. Taiwo is also just 199 points shy of 1,000 for her career. If she were to eclipse 1,000 career rebounds and points this season she would become just the third player to do so all-time, joining Caira Washington '17 and Darlene Saar '95.
WHITE HOUSE CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING
Thursday also marks the annual National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony hosted at the White House. Fans who plan to attend Thursday's contest should plan accordingly due to anticipated traffic delays and road closures. SCOUTING THE WOLVES
Cheyney enters Thursday's matchup with a record of 1-3 overall after falling to Elizabeth City State University 81-41 last Saturday. In the game, the Wolves were led by Taniyah Finney and Cianna Roberts with 11 points each. Roberts pulled down two boards for Cheyney, while Finney finished with two steals. Also playing well for Cheyney was Alicia Jones who added eight points, while Jaden Patrick grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Nytasia Braxton and Myaja Bynum both tallied three steals as well. The Wolves shot a combined 30% from three-point range, while also hitting 73.7% of their free throws.
Cheyney University, an HBCU founded in 1837, is an athletically independent school that does not compete under a governing body. The Wolves last competed as an NCAA Division II institution during the 2018-19 school year as members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Wolves are led by head coach Alishia Mosely who was hired in March of 2022. Mosely is in her second season with the program following a stint with the men's and women's basketball programs at Lincoln University of PA.
