SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – In the opening game of the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout, the George Washington women's basketball team fell in a nail-biter to West Virginia, 54-51. The Revolutionaries were led by Mayowa Taiwo, who recorded her first double-double of the season by pouring in 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Neither team got out to a fast start in the contest with both squads below 40% from the field after the first quarter. GW's Maren Durant and Nya Robertson both picked up a pair of fouls in the opening period, severely hampering their minutes during the first half. After a back-and-forth quarter, the Mountaineers held a slim 12-10 advantage over the Buff & Blue.
Offensively, the second quarter wasn't much better as GW held West Virginia to just four made field goals in the quarter and eight for the entire first half. West Virginia entered the contest with a team shooting percentage of 48.4%, but didn't come close to that mark in the contest as GW's defense held WVU to just 30.6% from the floor. Despite GW's tight defense, West Virginia still managed to carry a slim 25-20 lead into the halftime break.
After falling behind 40-30 late in the third quarter, GW used a 7-0 run to close out the quarter and stay within striking distance. The quick burst was aided by five straight points from Asjah Inniss, which included a corner 3-pointer and two free throws, while the final bucket of the run came off a contested layup from Durant.
GW came out firing in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 45 apiece on two free throws from Madison Buford. GW grabbed its first lead of the second half at the 4:51 mark of the final stanza off a Buford jumper, her final basket of the night. After the Buff & Blue took the lead, WVU put together a 5-0 spurt to take a 52-49 lead. Durant managed to tally a layup to cut the lead to 52-51, but it wasn't enough as the Mountaineers held on for the slim 54-51 win.
Taiwo's double-double was highlighted by her first rebound of the game which moved her into solo position of eighth on GW's all-time rebounds leaderboard. Taiwo now has 824 rebounds for her career, just six away from tying Kristin McArdle '92 for seventh place with 830. Along with Taiwo, Buford also put together a strong showing, tallying nine points in limited minutes due to early foul trouble. Taylor Webster finished with eight points and two rebounds for the Buff & Blue, while Nya Lok added six points and six rebounds. West Virginia was led by JJ Quinerly with 24 points and nine rebounds.
The Revolutionaries are back in action tomorrow to take on Southern Illinois in day two of the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout. The Salukis got off to a good start on day one of the event, defeating Charlotte 55-52 for the team's second win of the season. Tip-off is slated for 12:30 EST with live coverage available on FloHoops.
