SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The George Washington women's basketball team fell into an early hole and couldn't make up for it, stumbling to Southern Illinois, 66-55, on day two of the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout.
GW struggled to find its offensive rhythm early on, only tallying 10 points in the first quarter and trailing 16-10 heading into the second. Early in the second period, SIU took control of the game, using a 9-1 run to take a commanding 25-11 lead with seven minutes remaining until halftime. GW weathered the storm, managing to trim the Salukis lead to 10 with 1:13 left in the half before finally settling for a 41-28 deficit at the break.
SIU found an answer to every GW bucket in the third quarter, holding a double-digit advantage nearly the entire period. The Revolutionaries found life in the fourth quarter courtesy of back-to-back triples from Nya Lok and Nya Robertson that cut the deficit to seven at 58-51. However, just like they had done all game, SIU answered the bell with eight straight points of their own to rebuild the lead to 15. GW wouldn't cut the deficit to single digits again, eventually falling, 66-55.
Robertson led the offense with a game-high 23 points including four 3-pointers. Maren Durant tallied a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Lok and Sara Lewis both added seven points each. Southern Illinois was paced by Laniah Randle with 22 points and nine boards, while Seairra Hughes added 16.
GW will wrap-up the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout tomorrow against Charlotte. Tip-off with the 49ers is slated for 12:30 p.m. with live coverage available on FloHoops.
