Women’s Basketball Travels South for Three Games in Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team is set to take part in the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout from Nov. 23-25 in San Juan. GW will play three games over the span, battling West Virginia on Thursday, Southern Illinois on Friday, and Charlotte on Saturday. All games have a tip time of 12:30 p.m. and will be carried live on FloHoops.
LAST TIME OUT
GW dropped its first game of the season last Saturday at Maryland Eastern Shore, 62-59. Despite the visitors leading 17-5 after the first quarter, the Eagles outscored GW 20-11 in the second and 20-13 in the fourth to claim the victory at home. The Revolutionaries entered the contest 3-0, the program's best start to a season since 2007-08.
Sophomore Nya Robertson continued her solid start to the season for GW with a game-high 21 points. Grad student Nya Lok tallied 10 points and six rebounds after battling foul trouble all night, while fellow grad student Mayowa Taiwo tallied a season-high six points and eight rebounds. Senior Taylor Webster also recorded a season-high with nine points off the bench for the Buff & Blue.
DISCOVER PUERTO RICO SHOOTOUT
The Discover Puerto Rico Shootout is hosted in the country's capital city of San Juan with all games played at the Coliseo Guillermo Angulo. In total, 10 different women's college basketball teams will compete at the event, including fellow Atlantic 10 member VCU. Also included in the 10-team pool is Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, a public four-year institution that competes as an NCAA Division II affiliate with no athletic conference. SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
West Virginia enters the holiday week with a record of 3-0 following a 94-40 victory over Youngstown State. Led by head coach Mark Kellogg, the Mountaineers rank sixth nationally in field goal percentage following the first week of the season at 57.1%. West Virginia is led by JJ Quinerly who averages 17.0 points per contest. Quinerly also averages 2.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2.0 assists per game. Lauren Fields has also enjoyed a hot start to the season, averaging 16.7 points on 61.3% shooting through the team's first three games. Fields also averages 2.6 assists and 2.0 rebounds a game for the Mountaineers. Kyah Watson has been a presence down low, grabbing a team-high 8.3 rebounds per game to go along with averages of 10.3 points and 2.3 steals as well. GW has faced West Virginia 26 times with the all-time series split evenly at 13-13. This is the first meeting between the two programs since 1995 when the Mountaineers departed the Atlantic 10 conference.

Southern Illinois lands in Puerto Rico with a record of 1-3 after suffering a 79-73 loss to North Texas last Wednesday. The Salukis opened the season with an 85-70 triumph over Southern Missouri State but have since lost three-straight games. Prior to battling GW on Friday, Southern Illinois will square-off with Charlotte. The Salukis are paced by Shemera Williams who averages 19.0 points per game. Jaidynn Mason has tallied 15.5 points and 1.8 steals per contest for Southern Illinois, while Seairra Hughes has recorded 12.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Laniah Randle averages 11.3 points per contest and just misses the double-double average with a team-high 9.3 rebounds per night. Friday's meeting will be the first between the two programs all-time.

Charlotte currently sits at 3-1 after dominating Gardner-Webb 93-43 last Friday. The 49ers will also face Southern Illinois and West Virginia prior to taking on GW this Saturday. Charlotte's lone loss came against NC State in the season-opener. The 49ers fell 84-43 to the Wolfpack but have since rattled off three-straight wins to get back on track. Charlotte is led by Dazia Lawrence with 16.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Tracey Hueston also averages double figures for the 49ers with 12.3 points per contest. Hueston averages 5.8 boards per game and has seven blocks on the season.
