WASHINGTON – Following a 69-59 win over cross-town foe American on Wednesday night, the George Washington women's basketball team looks to remain undefeated when it travels to Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. with coverage live on DSN Sports.
HISTORIC START
Wednesday's win over American propelled GW to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2007-08. This is the program's best start under head coach Caroline McCombs, and just the second time GW has won its first three games in the past 18 seasons. A win on Saturday would give GW its first 4-0 start since 2006-07, the same year the Buff & Blue finished 28-4 overall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen.
LOK'S BIG NIGHT
In Wednesday's victory over American, grad student Nya Lok poured in a season-high 19 points to go along with three assists and three rebounds. Perhaps her most impressive stat, however, was the career-high six steals she created on the defensive end. Lok shattered her previous career-high of one steal, propelling the team to 16 total for the contest. GW hadn't reached that mark since the 2013 season when the team tallied 21 against Jacksonville State.
LAST TIME OUT
In the aforementioned 69-59 win over American on Wednesday, GW overcame a slow start to pull out a victory over the Eagles. After shooting just 28.5% from the field in the first half and trailing 30-23 at the break, GW kicked it into high gear. The Revolutionaries ripped off nine straight points to open the third quarter, aided by seven straight points from Lok. The Buff & Blue captured its first lead of the game at the 7:23 mark in the third quarter, the longest GW has gone without a lead this season. The Buff & Blue wouldn't be denied, outscoring the Eagles 27-13 in the third quarter to carry a 40-33 lead into the final period.
American wouldn't go away without a fight, benefiting from early foul trouble that limited standout Mayowa Taiwo's minutes all night. Despite Taiwo's limited playing time, GW relied on the veteran leadership of Lok and fellow grad student Essence Brown to guide the team to victory. The Buff & Blue outscored American 19-16 in the final quarter, aided by 6-10 shooting from the free-throw line to seal the win. Along with Lok's big night, Brown also turned in a solid performance, finishing with 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Also getting in on the action was grad transfer Maren Durant, who just missed a double-double with 10 points and eight boards. Sophomore Nya Robertson rounded out GW's double-digit scorers with 10 points and a game-high four assists.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Maryland Eastern Shore enters Saturday's contest with a record of 1-3 after falling to Stony Brook, 76-63, on Wednesday. The Hawks' lone win came on Nov. 11, a 91-71 dominating victory over Washington Adventist. GW holds a 4-0 all-time record against UMES, with the most recent victory coming last season when the Buff & Blue defeated the Hawks, 65-50, on Nov. 10 inside the Smith Center.
UMES is led by Thomas Mya who averages 12.8 points per contest. Mya also grabs 4.5 rebounds and dishes out 3.3 assists per game. Along with Mya, Jàla Bannerman puts in 9.8 points per game, while Zamara Haynes averages 9.5 points. Mahogany Lester leads the team in rebounds with 5.0 per game, while Ashanti Lynch, Ariana Seawall and Lainey Allen each grab 4.5 per game as well. As a team, UMES averages 64.0 points per contest, while shooting 35.7% from the field.
