WASHINGTON – Despite shooting just 28.5% from the field in the first half, the George Washington women's basketball team overcame its slow start to defeat American, 69-59, on Wednesday night. The win moves GW to 3-0 on the young season, the best start for the program since 2007-08.
Reminiscent of GW's comeback win against Manhattan last Friday, the Buff & Blue managed to overcome a slow start offensively to pick up the win. GW shot just 28.5% from the field in the first half, including a 3-15 mark in the first quarter. GW also struggled to find the range from deep in the first half, hitting just 2-11 from beyond the arc.
After trailing 30-23 at the break, GW kicked it into high gear. The Revolutionaries ripped off nine straight points to open the third quarter, aided by seven points from Nya Lok, who finished with 19 on the night. The Buff & Blue captured its first lead of the game at the 7:23 mark in the third quarter, the longest GW has gone without a lead this season. The Buff & Blue wouldn't be denied, outscoring the Eagles 27-13 in the third quarter to carry a 40-33 lead into the final period.
American wouldn't go away without a fight, benefiting from early foul trouble that limited standout Mayowa Taiwo's minutes all night. Despite Taiwo's limited playing time, GW relied on the veteran leadership of Lok and fellow grad student Essence Brown to guide the team to victory. The Buff & Blue outscored American 19-16 in the final quarter, aided by 6-10 shooting from the free-throw line to seal the win. Along with Lok's season-high 19 points, she also registered a career-high six steals. As a team, GW recorded 16 steals, the most since the program tallied 21 against Jacksonville State in 2013. Brown also turned in a solid performance, finishing with 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Also getting in on the action was grad transfer Maren Durant, who just missed a double-double with 10 points and eight boards. Sophomore Nya Robertson rounded out GW's double-digit scorers with 10 points and a game-high four assists.
GW looks to stay perfect on the year, traveling to Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday for a 2 p.m. clash. Live coverage will be carried by DSN.
