WASHINGTON – Fresh off a 55-49 victory at Manhattan last Friday, the George Washington women's basketball team is set for a cross-town matchup with American on Wednesday evening. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. inside the Smith Center with coverage available live on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
Last Friday, the Revolutionaries remained undefeated on the season, picking up a 55-49 comeback win over Manhattan. GW fell behind by as many as 12 in the opening minutes before finally settling for a 19-10 deficit at the end of the first quarter. Despite the slow start, GW's defense kept them in the game, holding the Jaspers to just 14 combined points over the second and third quarters. The Buff & Blue outscored Manhattan 28-14 in that span and led by five heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, grad student Madison Buford led the way, scoring seven of her game-high 20 points to fuel GW to victory. GW finished 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final frame as well, coming in clutch down the stretch to secure the 55-49 win. Along with Buford, sophomore Nya Robertson also got into double figures with 10 points. Grad student Essence Brown finished with eight, while grad student Maren Durant made her presence felt in the paint with four points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
FAST START
GW is out to a 2-0 start to the season for the first time since 2020-21. As of November 13, the Buff & Blue are also one of only five programs in the A-10 who have yet to suffer a loss this season. A win on Wednesday would propel GW to 3-0 which would be the best start for the program since the 2015-16 season.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
American enters Wednesday's matchup 1-1 overall after falling to La Salle, 62-53, last Saturday. The Eagles opened the season with an 81-68 victory of Longwood, led by Riley DeRubbo with 22 points. American is led by second-year head coach Tiffany Coll. Coll has been with American for 11 total seasons including five as an assistant, four as the associate head coach and now two at the helm of the program. Over her 11 total years with the Eagles, the program has an overall record of 170-129.
Through two games this season, American is led by Emily Johns who averages 17 points and five rebounds per game. Johns recorded 12 points in the Eagles' season-opening win and tallied a game-high 22 points in the team's loss to La Salle. Along with Johns, Lauren Stack averages 11.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. DeRubbo puts in 11 points per contest, while Molly Lavin averages a team-high 7.5 rebounds per game.
