Eight Revolutionaries Making Their Mark in Pro Ball

WASHINGTON – The beginning of fall marks the end of professional baseball season around the country. For eight GW baseball alums, fall signifies the beginning of the offseason and puts a cap on another standout year playing the game they love. Dating back to 1971, 24 GW baseball players have heard their named called in the MLB Draft, with countless others also making their mark in independent leagues across the country. Today, GW baseball is represented in three MLB organizations, as well as in the Pioneer League and the Frontier League. All eight players are excelling in their professional careers and continue to represent the Buff & Blue to the highest standard.
Harrison Cohen
Somerset Patriots (Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees)
GW Class of 2022
In Cohen's first professional season, he quickly rose through the ranks of the Yankees' farm system. Cohen made two appearances for the Tampa Tarpons in Single-A, recording a 3.86 ERA in 2.1 innings pitched. Cohen struck out four batters in his short Single-A stint, and held opposing batters held a .222 average against him. Following his two games with Tampa, Cohen was called up to the Hudson Valley Renegades at the High-A level. Cohen played the bulk of the 2023 season with the Renegades, making 32 appearances out of the bullpen. Cohen pitched 46.2 innings in Hudson Valley, striking out 60 batters and recording an ERA of 3.86. He also tallied one save and held opposing batters to a .215 average. Towards the end of the 2023 season, Cohen was called up to the Somerset Patriots in Double-A. Cohen made two appearances for the Patriots, recording one save in 3.1 innings of work. He struck out three batters in total and did not allow a hit in Somerset. In total, Cohen made 36 appearances in the 2023 season, all out of the bullpen. He finished with a 3.61 ERA and registered 67 strikeouts in 52.1 innings of work. Cohen and the Patriots advanced to the Eastern League Playoffs but were ultimately defeated by the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in the division series.
Cade Fergus
Jersey Shore BlueClaws (High-A Affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies)
GW Class of 2022
In his second professional season, Fergus shined bright in the Phillies organization. A 13th round pick in 2022, Fergus played the entirety of his first pro season with the Clearwater Threshers in Single-A. This season, Fergus started the year with the Threshers, putting up solid numbers throughout the season. He tallied a .255 batting average, registered a .356 on-base percentage, tallied 47 RBI, and belted 12 home runs. Fergus also tallied 48 runs scored and 14 doubles in his 74 games with Clearwater. Late in the season, Fergus was called up to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws at the High-A level. In his short stint with the BlueClaws to end the year, Fergus tallied three hits, drew eight walks, and tallied six runs scored. Fergus and the BlueClaws advanced to the South Atlantic League Playoffs but were defeated by the Hudson Valley Renegades in the division series.
Will Kobos
Greensboro Grasshoppers (High-A Affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates)
GW Class of 2018
During 2023, Kobos played the entirety of the season with the Grasshoppers. Kobos, a relief pitcher for Greensboro, appeared in 11 total games with a record of 2-1. Kobos tallied an ERA of 1.06 on the season and punched out 22 batters. Opponents held a .073 batting average against him, and he only gave up two earned runs. 2023 was Kobos' fifth season in minor league baseball. Kobos has made appearances in rookie ball all the way up to Double-A with the Pirates and has a career ERA of 3.77. He has 215 career strikeouts, holds a record of 16-12, and has held opponents to a batting average of just .185.
Keagan McGinnis
Billings Mustangs (Pioneer League)
GW Class of 2021
2023 marked the third season in the Pioneer League for McGinnis. After spending the first two seasons of his pro career with the Idaho Falls Chukars, McGinnis made his debut with the Mustangs this year. Through two seasons at Idaho Falls, McGinnis appeared in 70 games and posted a 4-4 record overall. He finished his stint as a member of the Chukars with a 5.59 ERA and struck out 125 batters over two seasons. This year with Billings, McGinnis appeared in 31 games, finishing with a 4-2 record on 42.2 innings pitched. McGinnis struck out 40 batters and held a 5.91 ERA for the season. McGinnis and the Mustangs advanced to the Pioneer League Championship this year but were defeated by the Ogden Raptors for the league crown.
Michael Kohn
Idaho Falls Chukars (Pioneer League)
GW Class of 2023
In his first professional season, Kohn put up stellar numbers for the Chukars. He appeared in 63 games and tallied a batting average of .257 on 261 at-bats. Kohn recorded 67 hits on the season including 18 doubles and 11 home runs. He drew 21 walks and finished with a .321 on-base percentage. Kohn knocked in 69 RBI, and he finished with a .987 fielding-percentage with most of his time spent at first base.
Anthony Frechette
Idaho Falls Chukars (Pioneer League)
GW Class of 2023
Play alongside former GW teammate Michael Kohn, Frechette put together a solid rookie season for the Chukars. Appearing in 38 games, Frechette finished with a .258 batting average and recorded 33 hits on the year. Frechette tallied three doubles, three home runs, and registered 16 RBI as well. He also drew 20 walks which boosted his on-base percentage to .362. Behind the plate, Frechette recorded a fielding-percentage of .986 and caught 20 runners stealing while catching for Idaho Falls.
Steve Barmakian
Rocky Mountain Vibes (Pioneer League)
GW Class of 2021
Barmakian entered the 2023 season after spending the previous two years with the Idaho Falls Chukars. During his two seasons with the Chukars, Barmakian hit a combined .325 with 147 total hits. Barmakian tallied 18 total doubles, five home runs, and drove home 66 RBI. He also drew 73 walks and stole 10 bases. In 2023 with the Vibes, Barmakian registered a .292 batting average with an on-base percentage of .389. He recorded 40 hits, six doubles, four triples, four home runs, and notched 35 RBI. Barmakian also tallied 30 runs scored and drew 23 walks in 40 games played. He split time between both the infield and outfield and finished with a fielding-percentage of .958.
Trevor Kuncl
Lake Erie Crushers (Frontier League)
GW Class of 2022
2023 marked the second pro season for Kuncl, both with the Crushers. In his rookie season with Lake Erie, he made 28 appearances out of the bullpen. He finished with a 3.62 ERA and struck out 33 batters on the year. This season, Kuncl appeared in 27 games, recording 27.1 innings pitched. He tallied an identical 3.62 ERA as his rookie season and struck out 27 batters on the year. He averaged 8.89 strike outs per nine innings and only issued 14 walks.
