GW baseball is mourning the passing of Hall of Famer Kenny Lake, who passed away on December 23, 2022 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland at the age of 63. Lake earned a varsity letter in all four of his seasons played at GW between 1977-81, as a two-way standout who pitched from the left side and played first base. From Peary High School in Rockville, Md., where he had been an All-Met first team selection by the Washington Post and the Montgomery County Player of the Year, Lake quickly became a workhorse on the mound for Coach Mike Toomey, and upon his graduation held all-time records in complete games (15) and shutouts (3). In GW's 1979 NCAA Tournament season, Lake set a single season school mark for most innings pitched with 108 2/3. At first base, Lake batted .280 in 1979, including .444 in NCAA Tournament play. He was described by Toomey as an ultimate team player and one of the most fierce competitors he ever coached.
Born in 1959 to Robert Edward Lake and Benita Van Steenburgh Lake, Lake leaves behind his beloved wife Ruth, son Trey, daughter Wren, and brother Steve, along with his many brothers from the GW baseball program. Fittingly, it was because of baseball that Kenny and Ruth met, as they were introduced before a baseball game that they attended with friends. His passion for baseball lives on through his son Trey as well as many of the kids and young adults he coached throughout the years. Lake used his baseball scholarship at GW to earn a Bachelor's Degree and went on to serve as a civilian analyst for the Defense Intelligence Agency.
A memorial gathering will be held for Kenny from 2 - 4pm at Lee Funeral Home-Calvert in Owings, MD on January 12th, with a memorial service to follow. He will long live in the hearts, minds and memories of the GW baseball brotherhood.
